Women’s Soccer Drops Road MEC Contest to Frostburg State 5-0

Frostburg, Md. - The Wheeling University Women's Soccer team (0-4, 0-2) hit the road on Saturday for their first road Mountain East Conference (MEC) game of the season. The Cardinals battled throughout the night, but the Bobcats offense was too much to overcome as they fell 5-0. The Cardinals were efficient throughout the night, taking 11 shots and putting eight on net, but Frostburg State was dominant in net as they kept the Cardinals off the board.

The first goal came quickly for the Bobcats as they found the net in the game's fourth minute as they went ahead 1-0. After two more Bobcat shots, Braedynn Porter would get Wheeling's offense going with a shot on net that was saved. However, the ball spent too much time in the offensive zone and the Bobcats continually took advantage. They scored three more goals in the half and went into halftime leading Wheeling 3-0. It could have been a lot worse had it not been for the solid defensive effort by goalkeeper Mikayla Yarwood. She faced seven shots on net in the first half and made four saves to keep it a three-goal deficit. Her work kept her team in it in the first half and gave them a chance to keep fighting in the second half.

The second half would be a stronger one for the Cardinals as they got off seven shots compared to just one in the first half. However, the Bobcats continued to be relentless on the offensive side of the ball, and they got back on the board in the 46th minute to make it a 4-0 game. They were back in the board in the 49th minute and that sealed the game at 5-0. The Cardinals would turn to their bench again in the second half as several of their freshman found their way onto the field. Sam Faulkner played the game's final 17 minutes. Neither team took a shot over the game's final 20 minutes as the team's traded possession. In the end the Cardinals would fall 5-0. With the loss, the Cardinals fall to 0-4 overall and 0-2 in conference play.

Mary DiFonzo led Wheeling's offensive attack with three shots, one on goal, and Kenadee Burgoyne  followed with two shots, one on goal. Braedynn Porter added two shots and Tayler Wells finished the night with a shot. Mikayla Yarwood faced a total of 12 shots on the night and made eight saves. Faulkner played the final 17 minutes and did not face a shot.

The Wheeling University Women's Soccer team heads back out on the road on Wednesday, September 14th when they battle Notre Dame College at 4 PM.
