Student-Athletes Report for Fall Camps Signaling the Start of 2022-23 Season

Student-Athletes Report for Fall Camps Signaling the Start of 2022-23 SeasonĀ

Wheeling, W. Va. - The Alma Grace McDonough Center was hustling and bustling on Saturday morning with activity as Wheeling University Fall Sports athletes reported for their 2022 Fall Camps. The campus welcomed over 200 student-athletes back to campus, bringing the heart of Wheeling University back. With the 2022-23 season just 19 days away, the students are set to get right to work as they prepare to compete in the Mountain East Conference (MEC) and look to bring multiple championships back to Wheeling.Ā

The seven teams that made their way to campus on Saturday included Football, Men's Soccer, Women's Soccer, Volleyball, Rugby, Men's Cross Country, and Women's Cross Country. Later in the month, they will be joined by Men's and Women's Golf on August 21st and all the fall sports will be on campus. The students went through check-in and got settled into their dorms for the next two weeks of training. They also turned in physical packets and met with university personnel to set them up with everything they would need for their 2022-23 academic year.Ā

The first two days consist of numerous meetings for the athletes with coaches as they gameplan for training camp and lay out goals for the rest of the season. Then, the teams will take the fields on Monday for their first official practices of the 2022-23 season. Last year, Wheeling University's fall sports teams brought back both of the school's MEC Championships courtesy of Volleyball and Women's Golf. This season, the Cardinals are hoping for similar success as they try to raise up the MEC Commissioner's Cup standings after finishing in ninth overall for the 2021-2022 season.Ā

For Wheeling University Athletic Director Carrie Hanna, it is great to see the campus flurrying with activity again and seeing student-athletes return to the fields.Ā

"This time of year, we are always thrilled to have our students back on campus," said Hanna. "We have missed seeing them all summer and to have the life and energy back on campus is amazing. I'm excited to see them prepare both on the field and in the classroom and am looking forward to great things this season."Ā

The first official practice for all seven teams that reported are scheduled for Monday, August 8th, and the 2022-23 season is set to begin on Thursday, August 25th, with both Volleyball and Women's Soccer opening up their seasons.Ā
