Wheeling, W. Va. – Over the last three years, Point Guard Jarett Haines played a big role on the Wheeling University Men's Basketball team. He helped lead the team to the Mountain East Conference (MEC) tournament in each of his three seasons in the red & black, including a run to the MEC Semifinals during the 2021-22 season. Haines is now officially taking his career to the next level after signing a contract with Maree B.C. Galway of the Ireland Superleague.
Haines played three of his four collegiate seasons with the Cardinals and finished his career with 1,243 points, ranking him 28th all-time in program history. He had his best season during his senior year when he averaged 18.8 points per game and grabbed a team-high 84 assists. He scored 30 or more points in a game twice during the season, with his season best coming against Glenville State on February 12th. For his efforts, he earned All-MEC Second Team honors for the first time in his career. In every season that he played in Wheeling, he averaged atleast 15 points per game and averaged 18+ points per game in two of those three seasons.
"Congratulations to Jarrett (Haines) on earning this opportunity," said Wheeling University Head Men's Basketball Coach Chris Richardson. "He has put in countless hours of hard work, and we are excited to follow his progress in the professional ranks."
The Ireland Superleague is the top tier Men's Basketball League in Ireland and has 12 member teams. Maree B.C. Galway is a member of the League's South Conference and battles teams such as C&S Neptune, Garveys Tarlee Warriors, and Tradehouse Central Ballincollig. The league as a whole is an active member of Basketball Ireland, which is recognized by FIBA as the national governing body of Basketball in Ireland. It gives players a chance to show off their skills on the national stage as they try to continue their careers after college.
Haines is thankful for this opportunity and looks to continue to work hard as he continues his career. He thanks everyone who has supported him over the years and is ready to get started.
"It's a dream come true to be signed (to a professional contract)," said Haines. "A lot of hard work and dedication is what got me to this point. I also appreciate my family for pushing me to this point and reminding me to always follow my dreams."
