Zac Bruney to Represent Wheeling Football at MEC Football Virtual Media Day

Wheeling, W. Va. - With training camps underway across the country, the 2022 NCAA Division II Football season is fast approaching. On Wednesday, all 11 football programs in the Mountain East Conference (MEC) will come together for the 2022 MEC Football Media Day. For the second year in a row, the event will be held virtually on Zoom with all 11 Head Coaches making an opening statement and then opening the floor for questioning. It will give the fans and the media an inside look into each program and into the heavy competition that runs throughout the conference.

Wheeling University Head Football coach Zac Bruney will be among the 11 Head Coaches making presentations as he talks about his team heading into the 2022 season. He enters his fourth season at the helm of the Wheeling Football program and has seen the program grow each season. The team posted their first .500 record during the COVID-19 shortened 2020 season and came back to set the single-season win record with a 5-6 mark in 2021. It was a year that included some milestone moments, including an overtime Homecoming win over West Liberty and the team's first shutout in program history.

The MEC Football media day will begin with a welcome from MEC Commissioner Reid Amos as he prepares the teams for the 2022 Football season. He will then be followed by the Supervisor of Officials Gene Steratore who will go over any rule changes and other things that the coaches need to know. After that, each of the 11 program head coaches across the conference will have a chance to make their opening statements before fielding questions from members of the media. Bruney will be available to the media from 1:45 – 2:00 PM as he talks about the 2022 Cardinals. Stay tuned to wucardinals.com and all our Wheeling University social media channels as we will have full coverage throughout the afternoon.

The 2022 season brings with it a lot of promise for the Cardinals as many of their key playmakers from last season are back. Headlining the group on offense is running back Sy Alli IV, who returns as a fifth-year player for the Cardinals. Alli was the MEC's regular season rushing leader in 2021, totaling 1,014 yards on the ground, and became Wheeling's first-ever 1,000-yard rusher. The ground game will rely heavily on the senior once again as he tries to increase his yardage. On the defensive side of the ball, Brandon Munoz and Jason Simon anchor the defensive line and linebacking corps while Rich White III returns in the secondary. The Cardinals defense allowed a program-best 21.36 points per game last season and hope to improve on that number once again in 2022.

The MEC Media day begins on Wednesday, August 17th, with opening remarks beginning at 11:30 AM. Be sure to follow along with wucardinals.com all day long for coverage and you can watch media day live by clicking HERE.
