Sean "SJ" Hutchinson has signed a National Letter of Intent to play for the Cardinals, men's basketball coach Chris Richardson announced.
Hutchinson makes his way to Wheeling after a standout prep career in the Philadelphia area. As a senior at The Phelps School, Hutchinson produced at a high level while competing alongside several college-bound teammates. For the season, Hutchinson filled out the stat sheet with per game averages of 17.2 points, 3.8 rebounds, 4.6 assists and 2.5 steals. He shot 57.9 percent from the field, 47.5 percent from behind the three-point arc, and 87.5 percent from the free throw line.
"We are thrilled to add SJ to our program," said Richardson. "He competed and produced against top-notch competition at the high school level in the Philadelphia area. His skill set translates well to the college level. He's a big, strong guard who can shoot, pass, make plays for others, and defend. We think he'll be a tremendous fit in the Mountain East Conference."
The addition of Hutchinson is another boost to a Cardinals backcourt that loses several experienced seniors to graduation. The 6'4" Hutchinson has the size to guard multiple positions on the perimeter, play on or off the ball, and put the ball in the basket from all over the court according to his new coach.
"He's a very versatile player," said Richardson. "He can score from all three levels, defend smaller guards, and match up with bigger wings. He's tough and competitive."
Off the floor, the head coach feels this is a great fit as welll
"SJ is a tremendous kid from a great family," Richardson continued. "When the Hutchinsons visited campus this spring, it just felt like a great fit for everyone involved. He hit it off well with our students and coaching staff. We cannot wait to get to work with him to help him reach his potential."
Hutchinson is the son of Sean and Stephanie Hutchinson.
