Wheeling, W. Va. – Throughout the month of May, the Wheeling University Rugby team has a lot to look forward to. They will be training for the 2022 National Collegiate Rugby (NCR) Collegiate 7's tournament, but six of their players will be training for another match in the middle of the month. On Friday, the Pittsburgh Forge U23 announced their team to compete against the Old Glory U23 team in Washington, D.C. on May 21st.
The game will serve as the curtain opener to the Major League Rugby (MLR) game between the Old Glory DC and the Houston Sabercats. The Pittsburgh Forge U23 team is comprised of some of the best rugby players in Pittsburgh and the surrounding area. Representing the Cardinals in the game will be
Josh Blankenship,
Bailey Brunner,
Jacob Deglow,
Larry Old, Rati Ramishvilli, and
EJ Vidal. Each one of those guys were big contributors during the 15's season that saw Wheeling make it to the NCR Rhino Rugby Bowl and will look to continue their strong year in this game. They will be training over the next couple weeks before heading to Washington D.C. on May 19th.
From there, they will have a few run throughs with their teammates before taking the pitch on May 21st. They will then meet the Old Glory DC U23 team for the curtain opening match at 10:30 AM. It will be a 15'match with Wheeling's forwards serving as an anchor for this team. After the game is over, the players will then get a chance to watch the pros do it as Old Glory DC takes on the Houston Sabercats in MLR action. It is a late season matchup between two top MLR teams and will be broadcast on the Rugby Network. More details as to whether or not the Pittsburgh U23 vs. Old Glory DC U23 game will be broadcast will be released at a later date.
The Wheeling University Rugby team continues training for the NCR 7'S tournament, running May 27th through May 29th in New Orleans, Louisiana.
