Wheeling, W. Va. - As the Wheeling University Football team heads into the summer months, the coaches are on the road looking for the next generation of Cardinals that will suit up at Bishop Schmitt Field. For those looking to make themselves known, Bishop Schmitt Field will be just the place to show off their talents this weekend. Wheeling Football is set to host their JR Day Skill Showcase on campus this Sunday. May 22nd, with registration beginning at 9:30 AM.
The camp is open for high school athletes, grades 9-12, who are looking to play college football at the next level. Upon arrival on campus, the students will check-in and head to Troy Theater where they will be introduced to the Football Coaching Staff. They will then take a tour of the campus before lunch in the Benedum Cafeteria. After that, it's time to take the field for the skill showcase, running from 1:30 –3:30 on Bishop Schmitt Field. The athletes are encouraged to bring cleats, workout clothes, and a water bottle for the workout as well as tennis shoes in the event that workouts get moved inside.
The Wheeling University Football team had their best season to date in 2021, going 5-6 overall and 5-5 in Mountain East Conference (MEC) play, setting program records in wins in both categories. Running Back Sy Alli became the first Cardinal to lead the MEC in rushing when he ran for 1,014 yards across 229 carries. They also picked up their first home win against rival West Liberty in what was one of the top games of the entire athletics season as they earned a 26-20 overtime win over the Hilltoppers. Head Coach Zac Bruney and his staff now enter their fourth full season of competition in the MEC and are looking to add on to the team while continuing to grow the legacy of Wheeling football.
Registration is still open for the JR Day Skill Showcase and participants can learn more and sign-up by clicking HERE. We look forward to seeing you on Sunday, May 22nd, at Bishop Schmitt Field.
