Game Recap: Men's Lacrosse |

Andersson Keeps Multi-Goal Streak Alive in Loss to Frostburg State

Frostburg, MD. – After being off for 18 days, the Wheeling University Men's Lacrosse team was back at it Wednesday against Frostburg State in non-conference action. They started the game off strong, but in the end it wasn't enough as they fell to the Bobcats 18-6 to fall to 2-9 on the season. Sophomore Mike Andersson kept his Multi-Goal game streak alive with two goals but the Cardinals couldn't supplement their early action.

In the first quarter, it was a back and forth game over the first 15 minutes of the game. It didn't take long for Wheeling to get on the board after freshman John Zaramba won the opening faceoff. Three minutes, later, sophomore Jake Wodarek scored his first goal of the game to take a 1-0 lead. A minute and a half later, Frostburg State tied the game at 1-1 before a Bobcats turnover got the ball back in Wheeling's stick. Wodarek was at the forefront of Wheeling's offensive attack again as he cleared the ball and took it all the way to the net for his second goal of the day to make it a 2-1 Cardinal advantage. Frostburg State took their first lead with the next two goals, but Wheeling tied it up as Dakota Strong notched his first goal of the day to tie it at 3-3.

Over the last five minutes of the first quarter, the Bobcats scored two more goals and lead 5-3 after the first 15 minutes.  However, things were about to open up as the Bobcats scored the next five goals to turn a 5-3 game into a 10-3 game with five minutes to go before halftime. Wheeling got the ball back with 5:21 to go after a Bobcats missed shot. Joshua Wolford picked up the groundball and Wheeling moved it up field. Jacob Knippel brought the ball into the Cardinals' offensive zone and found Brody Fawver. Fawver took his shot and scored his first goal of the night to turn it into a 10-4 game with just under five minutes. Frostburg added one more goal in the waning seconds of the half and went into halftime leading the Cardinals 11-4.

As the second half began, Wheeling would turn to their offensive leader to get them back on the board as they tried to battle back. Frostburg scored the first two goals of the half before Wheeling got the ball back. After a groundball from Chase Brenner, Mike Andersson took a shot and missed just wide. However, he got the ball back and made his second shot count as he scored his first goal and made it a 13-5 game. The Cardinals had their chances throughout the quarter, taking four shots, but none of them were able to connect. The Bobcats added four more goals and the game moved to it's final 10 minutes with Frostburg leading 17-5.

The fourth quarter saw both defenses step up their games as neither team scored over the first nine minutes of play. Wheeling got off four shots during that time and our shot the Bobcats 4-3 over those nine minutes of play. However, it would be Andersson who would finally find the net at the 5:32 mark. Wodarek was bringing the ball up the field and faked towards the net. However, he dumped the ball off the Andersson, giving him the shot that would end up in his second goal of the day and Wheeling's sixth as the score moved to 17-6. Not even a minute later, Frostburg answered with their first and only goal of the quarter. This would bring the game to it's 18-6 final score ending the night for the Cardinals.

Wodarek and Andersson led the offense, each scoring two goals on the day to account for more than half of their team's offense. For Andersson, it was the fourth straight game where he scored multiple goals and he has now scored 15 goals over his previous four games. He entered Wednesday as the Great Midwest Athletic Conference's fifth leading scorer and now has 22 goals on the season. Wodarek led the team with two assists on the day and scored four total points for his team. The other two goals came courtesy of Brody Fawver and Dakota Strong to round out the Wheeling offense. Joshua Wolford got the start in net and made 13 saves on 30 shots faced taking the loss. Dallin Isaacson played the final 15 minutes in net and faced three shots, making two saves.

The Wheeling University Men's Lacrosse team returns home on Saturday, April 9th, when they host Lake Erie College at 2 PM.
