Wheeling, W. Va. – Another week has come and gone and the Mountain East Conference (MEC) recognized it's top performers of the week on Monday. The Wheeling University Track & Field team swept this week's honors as
Jabez Reeves was named the MEC Track & Field Male Athlete of the Week, while
Jenay Soumahro was named the MEC Women's Track & Field Athlete of the Week. Both set top marks in their specific events as the Wheeling Track & Field team prepares for the upcoming MEC Outdoor Track & Field Championships this week.
Reeves was one of the select Cardinals that got invited to compete at the Jesse Owens Classic at Ohio State. He competed in both the 200-Meter and the 100-Meter, but his best performance of the day by far came in the 100-Meter dash. He began the day in the Qualifier where he competed against several Division I athletes. Reeves would break the school record in the event with a time of 10.48 seconds to qualify for the finals. Then, he took it a step further in the finals, breaking the school record again with a final time of 10.34 seconds. The run was the top time in the MEC so far this season and is .12 seconds faster than the closest competitor. For Reeves this is the fourth time this season that he has set a school record and the first outdoor record that he has broken this season.
The next award winner for the Cardinals was sophomore runner
Jenay Soumahro, who competed at the Otterbein Twilight. She ran in the 400-Metter Hurdle and claimed one of the team's two gold medals of the day. She set a new PR in the event, running a time of 1:05.15 to finish with the top time of the tournament. It was also the top time of any MEC Competitor this season and was the first to break the 1:06.00 mark the season. Soumahro has been a regular in the sprinting competitions and competed in the 400-Meter dash once the outdoor season began. It was her best showing of the season as she prepares for the MEC Championships next week.
Soumahro and Reeves are now the 32nd and 33rd Wheeling University Student-Athletes to earn weekly honors this season as Cardinals continue to rack up the recognition. For the Track & Field te, they are the third and fourth athletes to receive honors this season. Last week, the Cardinals took home two player of the week awards with Emily Holzopfel earning MEC Women's Golfer of the Week and Matt Anderson winning the Great Midwest Athletic Conference (GMAC) Athlete of the Week.
The Wheeling University Track & Field team is back in action on Sunday, May 1st, when they compete in day one of the MEC Outdoor Track and Field Championships.
