Wheeling Scores Biggest Win of the Season vs. Davis & Elkins

Wheeling, W. Va. – It was a big day for offense at Bishop Schmitt Field as the Wheeling Men's Lacrosse team (3-8, 1-3) played host to Davis & Elkins. The Cardinals scored 16 goals on the day as they picked up their first Great Midwest Athletics Conference (GMAC) win of the season 16-6 over Davis & Elkins. The 16 goals were the most scored in a game by the Cardinals since they scored 16 goals against Dominican (NY.) Back on March 31st, 2019.

The Cardinals scoring got started right out of the gate as it took them just a minute and a half to get on the board. After winning the opening faceoff, Brody Fawver took a shot that missed high, but Jacob Knippel was there to back it up. He took advantage scoring his first goal of the day to make it a 1-0 Cardinals lead. Wheeling would control the pace of the game throughout the first quarter and kept the ball in their zone. Fawver would get his time to shine just minutes later when he scored with 9:00 to go in the first to make it a 2-0 game. On the ensuing face-off, Wheeling forced a turnover and got the ball to freshman Aidan Grumbler. Grubler took advantage by scoring his first collegiate goal to give the Cardinals a 3-0 lead. Neither team would score over the final seven minutes of the quarter and Wheeling led 3-0 after one.

In the second quarter, the Cardinals leaf remained three for the first six minutes until Fawver got the ball in his stick again. He would find teammate Knippel for his second goal of the day to make it a 4-0 Cardinals advantage. After being quieted for the first quarter and a half, Mike Andersson would get involved in the offense scoring back-to-back goals as he extended his multi goal streak to six straight games. Dylan Lavern added his first collegiate goal with 1:05 left in the half and it looked like Wheeling was headed into the half with a 7-0 lead. However, as the halftime clock was running out, defender Matt Anderson took a shot from the 47-yard line that found the net and made it an 8-0 game as the team's broke for the locker room.

The Cardinals carried that momentum into the second half as Devin Norris notched his first goal of the year two minutes into the third to make it a 9-0 Cardinals advantage. However, Davis & Elkins wasn't gone as they scored a pair of goals to make it 9-2 before Wheeling got back on the board. Andersson scored his third goal of the day with 8;13 to play in the third and picked up his fifth hat trick in the last six games. Brody Fawver got back on the board a few minutes later and picked up a hat trick of his own at the 1:40 mark to give Wheeling their 12th goal of the day. Davis & Elkins added two more goals before the quarter ended and Wheeling lead heading into the final 15 minutes 12-4, their largest third quarter lead of the season.

After a Senators goal began the fourth quarter, the Cardinals had their third hat trick of the day as Jacob Knippel scored to make it a 13-5 game. The Senators added one more goal before Mike Andersson got back at it. He added two more goals to his ledger and finished with a game-high five goals on the day and Wheeling extended their lead to 15-6. Brody Fawver ended the scoring with his fourth goal of the day with 29 seconds to go as he brought the game to it's final score of 16-6. It was the Cardinals first GMAC win since 2019 as they move to 3-8 on the season and 1-3 in conference play. The offense spread the ball around effectively throughout the day and it showed on the scoreboard with their highest offensive output of the year.

Mike Andersson led the way with five goals and now has 30 goals on the season . With two games to go, Andersson is now 15 goals away from the program record of 45 held by former Cardinal Derek Downs. Wheeling had two more hat tricks on the day as Brody Fawver and Jacob Knippel each hit the mark. Fawver scored four goals on the day while Knippel added three goals. Knippel led the team with three assists and tied with Andersson for the team lead with six points on the day. Goalkeeper Joshua Wolford had a big day making 11 saves on 17 shots on goal to round out the day.
