Game Recap: Softball |

Feyh’s Big Day Not Enough as Softball Falls in Doubleheader Sweep

Elkins, W. Va. – The Wheeling University Softball team (9-26, 2-18) wrapped up their weekend in Elkins, West Virginia against the Davis & Elkins Senators. It was a big day for sophomore Cassie Feyh, but it wasn't enough as they fell in both games as they drop to 2-18 in Mountain East Conference (MEC) play. They dropped game one 7-0 before falling 10-1 in the second game of the day.

Game One: Davis & Elkins 7, Wheeling 0

Game one saw Abby Bumbico get the start in the circle and she continues her stretch of strong outings. She threw 3.0 innings for the Cardinals allowing one run on five hits while walking two batters. Madison Macy would then be called in relief and pitched the next two innings and was charged with three runs on three hits while walking one and striking one out. While they weren't getting runs in bunches, the Senators just kept slowly adding on and it ended up doing in the Cardinals. Aubrie Lafferty would throw the final inning of the game and gave up three runs on three hits while walking a batter. The Cardinals pitchers did their best to limit the damage, but the Cardinals hitters could not crack the code of the Senators pitchers.

Wheeling would be retired 1-2-3 in each of the first five innings of play and headed into the sixth looking for their first hit of the day. After two outs to start the inning Head Coach Caressa DeRossett pinch hit with Cassie Feyh and she would break the no-hit bid. She singled to center field to break the no-hit bid but was stranded on a groundout to end the inning. That would be the lone Cardinals hit of the game as they finished our going 1-2-3 in the seventh to drop game one 7-0. The Cardinals would look to bounce back in the second game as they tried to find their offensive footing.

Feyh picked up the only hit of the game for the Cardinals with her pinch hit single as she finished the day 1-1. With the loss, Wheeling dropped to 0-3 so far on the weekend and needed a game two bounce back.

Game Two: Davis & Elkins 10, Wheeling 1

After getting just one hit in the first game of the day, Wheeling came out in game two and got things started right from the get-go. Feyh led off the top of the first reaching on an error and Autumn Oehlstrom would hit a one-out single and moved runners to first and second. After the second out of the inning, Makie Paxson came through with an RBI single scoring Feyh and giving Wheeling a 1-0 lead. However, Paxson was thrown out trying to stretch it into a double and the inning ended with the Cardinals holding their first lead of the weekend at 1-0. However, the lead would not last long as the Senators tallied four runs in the bottom of the first, and the Cardinals found themselves down once again 4-1 heading into the second inning. That was the only run of the game for the Cardinals as they couldn't generate any more offense.

Freshman Randi Holder would get the start for Wheeling as she lasted 3.0 innings and was charged with 10 runs on 10 hits while walking four and striking out a batter in the loss. The big inning came in that first inning when she was charged with four runs, but they added on with three runs in the second, on in the third, and two in the fourth inning to seal the win and enact the run rule. Jenee Brodeur would throw the final inning of work and did not allow a run on two hits to finish out the game. The Cardinals would take the loss to drop the doubleheader and now looks forward to some home softball with three home contests this week against West Liberty, Fairmont State, and Frostburg State as the regular season rolls on.

Cassie Feyh once again led the way going 1-3 in the game and finished 2-4 in the doubleheader. Autumn Oehlstrom went 1-1 with a walk while Gina Fogle and Makie Paxson each picking up hits in the loss. Wheeling now falls to 2-18 in conference play and continues to search for their first win since March 20th and is hoping to get it with their home series coming up.

The Wheeling University Softball team returns to action on Wednesday, April 20th, when they take on West Liberty with first pitch at 3 PM.
