Keala McCurry Named MEC Women’s Track & Field Athlete of the Week

Wheeling, W. Va. – On Monday, the Mountain East Conference (MEC) announced their weekly award winners, and for the second week in a row the Wheeling University Track & Field team was featured. Sophomore Keala McCurry was named the MEC Women's Track & Field Athlete of the Week after she increased her title as the MEC's leading Pole Vaulter.

McCurry entered the weekend as the Conference's top pole vaulter with a height of 3.60 meters, which she set two weeks ago at the High Point Verteklasse. She once again competed in the Pole Vault once again at IUP on Saturday and beat her old mark when she jumped 3.41 meters. She finished .50 meters better than her fellow competitors in the field. It was her second win in the Pole Vault this season as she continues to raise the bar on the event. She is coming off the MEC Indoor Championship in the Pole Vault earlier this season and is looking to add another title to her resume as outdoor season continues through April and early May.

For McCurry, the Pole Vault has been her specialty since she came on campus a year ago. She dealt with COVID regulations last season and really didn't get a chance to compete during her freshman season. Now that things are slowly getting back to normal, McCurry is getting the chance to shine and earns her first MEC Athlete of the Week Award. Overall, McCurry is the 28th Wheeling University Student-athlete  to win weekly honors for the conference. She is the second member of the Wheeling Track & Field team to earn weekly honors during outdoor season.

The Wheeling University Track & Field team returns to action on Friday, April 15th at the Bison Outdoor Classic.
