Wheeling, W. Va. – After opening their spring season last week, the Wheeling University Men's Golf team continues their spring schedule on Monday when they head to the MEC Spring classic. They had a strong showing at their spring schedule opener, and look to keep that momentum going in their second spring contest of the season The Cardinals showed progress in the 36-hole first tournament of the year and look to build on that momentum this time.
In their last outing, Wheeling took 12th out of 12 teams at the Mid Pines Invitational in North Carolina. While their position in the final standings wasn't where they wanted it to be, it gave their younger stars a chance to grow on the green. After a round one that helped them get their feet underneath of them, many of the Cardinals got back to their normal selves in round two, and finished the tournament strong. All five Wheeling golfers were in action over the three-day event, with sophomore
Yadhu Urs once again leading the way with a strong day on the course. He finished ninth in the conference during the fall, and built on that performance during his spring opener.
In his first showing of the spring, Urs finished 12th overall and shot four over par for his final two rounds of play. He shot an even par in round one, scoring a 72, before adding a 73 to his score on day two to put him at one over par for the event. He kept that strong score throughout the final round of the day, until the final three holes saw him score three straight bogeys to bring his day three score to 76. However, Urs shot under 80 in each of the three rounds and just missed finishing in the top 10 of the event. It was a big start for Urs during the spring season, and he looks to keep up that success as he moves through the season.
Another Cardinal that had a strong tournament was graduate student
Hunter Travis, who was in and out during fall season. Travis shot just over the 80 stroke mark, finishing with scores of 80 and 82 in the final two rounds. He finished at +10 and was tied for 59th in the field in his first spring event of the season. He hadn't hit the sub 85 mark at all during the fall season, and is adding some experience to the Cardinals lineup. Austin Panhorar also finished the event strong, coming in a tie for 59th in the field. He shot an 82 on the final day, hitting two birdies on the front nine, and dropping his score from 85 on the first day. Panhorst and Travis both look to continue their improvement in their second outing of spring.
While the Men's Golf team will not be competing in the 2022 NCAA Regional Invitational, they have two more invitationals to get some work in during the spring season. After Monday's MEC Classic, the Cardinals will compete in one final event, at the Oglebay Invitational, to wrap up the spring season. It is a chance for them to get to compete against fellow MEC teams to see where they stand for next season. They look to continue to grow on the course and get experience for this younger team. They can then use that experience in the fall next season to try and compete for an MEC Championship and a spot in the NCAA Regional tournament.
