Lauren Calhoun Tabbed Second Team CCA All-Region Honors

Wheeling, W. Va. – Over the last week, Sports Information Directors, Conference Commissioners, and Athletic Directors around the region have put in votes for the 2022 Conference Commissioner's Association (CCA) All-Region team. The votes are in, and Wheeling University Women's Basketball Player Lauren Calhoun has been chosen as a CCA Second Team All-Region Player. It is the first All-Region award of Calhoun's career and marks the second straight season that Wheeling has had a CCA All-Region player.

2021-2022 was a breakout season for Calhoun as she led the Mountain East Conference (MEC) in scoring. In her previous two seasons, her season-high in scoring was 96 points back during her sophomore season. This year, she scored more than five times that amount finishing with 543 points and an average of 19.4 points per game. She scored 19 more points than the next closest player, who was the MEC Player of the Year Re'Shawna Stone from Glenville State. In the MEC Tournament, Calhoun played a big part in Wheeling's 86-82 win over Alderson Broaddus in the first round. Calhoun had a double-double in that game, scoring 22 points and 10 rebounds even though he was forced to sit out most of the first half due to foul trouble.

While she has been noted for her work on the offensive side of the ball, she has also been one of the top defensive players in the conference as well. She finished third in the conference in total rebounds with 318, and second in the conference in defensive rebounds with 233. She averaged double-digit rebounds in both categories, 11.4 in total rebounds and 12.1 in defensive rebounds. She played in 28 games for the Cardinals this season and finished with 18 total double-doubles. She finishes the year with a double-double in 13 of her final 14 games that included a streak of nine straight double-doubles. She stepped up in a big way this season and was a leader for the women both on and off the court.

In total, six players from the MEC were represented, with three players making the list on each team. The total list of CCA All-Region Players are below:

First Team:
Abby Beeman (Shepherd)
Riley Fitzwater (Concord)

Calhoun will now move into the voting phase for the CCA All-American teams next week.
