Greensburg, PA. – The Wheeling Men's Lacrosse team (0-5, 0-0) opened Great Midwest Athletic Conference (GMAC) play on Tuesday when they took on Seton Hill. Sophomore
Mike Andersson led the way with two goals, but it wasn't enough as they fell to the Griffins 22-5. The Cardinals spread out their five goals over the final three-quarters of play, but it wasn't enough to slow down a ranked Seton Hill attack.
After being held off the scoresheet for the first time this season, Andersson came back strong on the road, recording two goals on a team-high seven shots in the game, putting two of those shots on goal. The other three Wheeling goals came courtesy of
Brenner Chase, who scored for the third game in a row,
Jacob Knippel, and
Jake Wodarek.
Brody Fawver and Knippel each picked up assists on the day to round out the offense. In goal, Josh Wolford got the start and made seven saves in 30 minutes of play while
Dallin Isaacson played the second half and made eight saves in his 30 minutes in net. A slow start got Wheeling behind again and they were never able to recover in the game.
The Cardinals were able to keep Seton Hill off the board for the first three minutes of play, but the Griffins came through with their first goal three minutes in. Peyton Gensler scored for Seton Hill and put Wheeling in an early 1-0 hole. The Griffins controlled the offense for a majority of that first quarter, they added four more goals in that first quarter, and Wheeling did not take a shot in the quarter. The Griffins led 5-0 after one and Wheeling was looking to get their offense going as the game moved to the second.
The Griffins added two more goals to start the second before the Wheeling offense got their first goal of the game. It came with 10:24 remaining before halftime when
Jake Wodarek found the bet. Seton Hill turned the ball over and Wodarek got the ball in his stick. He made a move and put the ball on to make it a 7-1 game. The Griffins added another goal before Wheeling gained control of the ball again.
Jacob Knippel took the first shot and missed wide but the ball stayed in Wheeling's possession.
Brenner Chase got the rebound and scored his fifth goal in the last three games when he made it an 8-2 game. Seton Hill added five more goals before halftime and Wheeling trailed 12-2.
In the third quarter, it was Wheeling who got the offense started right off the opening face-off. They got the ball and
Mike Andersson scored the first of his two goals on the night. It was his sixth goal of the season and made it a 12-3 game with 14:52 to go in the game. Four Seton Hill goals later, Wheeling was back at it, this time with
Jacob Knippel. Freshman
John Zaramba won a face-off and got the ball in the Cardinals' hand. Knippel took his shot and found the net to make it a 16-4 game. One more Seton Hill goal would complete the third-quarter scoring and send the teams into the final 15 minutes with Seton Hill leading 17-4.
Over the final 10 minutes, Wheeling would score one more goal from
Mike Andersson. The goal would come in a man-up opportunity after a penalty was called on Seton Hill. Wheeling quickly moved the ball upfield and Andersson took his second shot on goal of the day. Andersson hit the mark for his seventh goal of the season, a team-high for Wheeling, and made it an 18-5 game. The Cardinals played out the final 10 minutes and took seven shots during that span. Seton Hill added five more goals to their total and the game would end at 22-5. For Wheeling, they allowed three fewer goals than they did in this game a year ago as they continue to build and get ready for GMAC play.
The Wheeling University Men's Lacrosse team is back in action on Saturday, March 5th, when they host Felician University with face-off at noon.
