Wheeling, W. Va. – The Wheeling University Wrestling team (1-4, 0-4) hosted rival West Liberty in dual action on Tuesday night. They got one match win on the night, but it wasn't enough as they fell 37-3. It was a better outcome than their meet last season as Wheeling continues to grow throughout the season.
The night began with a double forfeit at the 125-pound class before sophomore
Chase Montgomery took the mat. He would take on West Liberty's Luke Miller and got the advantage early on and led 6-2 at the end of thr first period. He would keep that momentum going, but neither wrestler would score another point throughout the match. When all was said and done, Montgomery secured the 6-2 victory and had Wheeling out in front 3-0. However, the Cardinals would be forced to forfeit the next two matches bringing the team score to 12-3. This would bring
Brennon Reid to the mat in the 157-pound match.
It was his first time Reid has faced West Liberty in his young career and he was looking to make a big impact. He fell behind early in the match, and it came back to haunt him as he fell in a 13-2 Major Decision. After four more forfeits on the night, it brought up the 285-pound match between sophomore
Clarouly Meca as he faced Jamie Kilmer. Meca kept it close early in the match and trailed by four after one period. However, that deficit was too much for Meca to fight back from as he fell in a 11-5 decision that would end the night. Wheeling would end up falling to West Liberty 37-3.
