Wheeling, W. Va. - On Monday, the Mountain East Conference (MEC) released their weekly honors and the Wheeling University Men's Basketball team was represented. Senior guard Jarett Haines was named the Men's Basketball Co-Player of the Week for his effort on the court. It is the first time Haines has won the award this season, and he is the second member of the Men's Basketball team to be honored.
In the two games against Glenville State and Concord, Haines combined to score 63 points, and provided some highlight worthy moments. He shot a healthy 60% from the floor and scored 25 or more points in both games. After dealing with injury issues for the past couple of weeks, Haines has broken out over his last three games, averaging 26.2 points per game during that span, and is once again proving he can be a top scorer in the MEC.
On Wednesday night, Haines scored 28 points against Concord and helped lift his team to an 82-80 win over the Mountain Lions. His big moment came in the final seconds of the game as he came to the free throw line with a chance to win it. There were three seconds showing on the clock and Haines was able to nail both free throws and bring the score to 82-80. Concord drove the ball down the court in a last second attempt to try and win the game, but the shot fell short and Wheeling picked up a huge conference win down the stretch.
On Saturday, Haines put together one of his best offensive outputs of the season, scoring 35 points in his team's 96-90 loss at the hands of Glenville State. Haines shot an impressive 11-16 from the floor while leading the team with five assists. Haines also continued his success from the free throw line, shooting 10-11 from the charity stripe. As the regular season comes to a close, Haines is playing some of his best basketball of the season and is looking to lead his team into the MEC Tournament.
Jarett Haines is the 19th Wheeling University student-athlete to earn MEC Weekly Honors this season. Last week, Men's Track & Field sprinter Jabez Reeves won the award for the second time this season, and Haines is the second member of the Wheeling University Men's Basketball team to be honored.
The Wheeling University Men's Basketball team is back in action on Wednesday, February 16th, when they take on Fairmont State with tip-off at 7:30 pm.
