Wheeling, W.Va- The Cardinals of Wheeling University (1-7, 0-5) look to rebound after a close loss Wednesday evening. Returning back to the Alma Grace McDonough Center, Wheeling will tip-off at 4PM on Saturday against the University of Charleston. This will be their first home game since the end of November.
Last time out, the Cardinals fell in a nail-biter, 92-84, against undefeated West Virginia State. A high scoring contest for both teams, Wheeling had four players reach double digits. Tight through the entire game, the Cardinals held the lead at halftime 45-40. But as the second half began, West Virginia State came out hot, tying the game 47-47 just two minutes in. Later on in the half, Wheeling was down 72-67 but fought back to make it a two point game, 79-77 with 2:21. They made it 82-79 with under two minutes left, but unfortunately, West Virginia State had the last run, winning 92-84.
Marcus Johnson led the way in points, scoring 18 in 32 minutes. Johnson went 8-19 at the field and 1-3 from three. Additionally, Johnson contributed with 4 rebounds and 4 assists. Brent Price also was big for the Cardinals as he recorded a double-double. Having 10 points, 10 rebounds and 3 assists, Price was also big at the free throw line, going 100%. The other two Cardinals that scored in the double-digits were John Korte (12) and Ryan Reasbeck (14). On the evening, Wheeling shot 47.9% from the field and 40.9% from three. An aspect Wheeling would like to improve is their free throw percentage that sat at just 45.5%.
Wheeling looks to close off the 2022 calendar year strong as they only have four games remaining before the New Year. Currently 12th in the conference, the Cardinals are only a few conference wins away from rising back up in the standings. This can start by defeating the University of Charleston (4-5, 3-2). After falling in several close games to begin their season, Wheeling is on the cusp of reeling off victories.
The Matchup
The Cardinals and Golden Eagles have been a competitive matchup for years, as the series is currently tied 19-19. This split also holds true when Wheeling is the home team as the series record is 8-8. Wheeling's longest win streak came from 2010-2013, the Cardinals won 7 straight games. The 2022-23 Cardinals look to start their own streak against the University of Charleston, starting this Saturday.
In their most recent meeting, The Golden Eagles were able to outlast Wheeling, winning 86-70. Wheeling was led by former Cardinal Jordan Reid who had 18 points and 5 rebounds. Price also had a solid night, scoring 9 points and grabbing 3 rebounds. Korte dominated the glass as he led the team with 7 rebounds.
