Miller Caps off Oberlin Invitational with Big Win for Women’s Swimming

Oberlin, OH. – The Oberlin College Invitational came to a conclusion on Saturday as the 2022 portion of the Wheeling Women's Swimming team came to an end. The Cardinals finished 11th overall in the team standings, but had some big performances to lead the way in the pool. They had one win to go along with two other top five finishes as they impressed throughout the weekend.

Leading the way for the entire event as well as on the final day was sophomore Jade Miller. Miller finished with top five finishes all week, and it culminated with her best performance of the event. She kicked off the day in the Women's 200 Yard Backstroke and entered with a seed time of 2:17.41. She lowered that time by over six seconds and ended up just edging the first place swimmer in the event with a time of 2:11.14. While Miller didn't write her name in the history books this time, it was still her best individual finish of the meet as she capped off a solid 2022 portion of her schedule. The sophomore has been a leader for this young team and looks to take her success as she prepares for the 2023 Mountain East Conference (MEC)/Great Midwest Athletic Conference (GMAC) Championships.
The other top five finishes on the day came from freshman Marra Johnson and senior Meredith Mandal.

The other top five finishes on the day came from freshman Marra Johnson and senior Meredith Mandal. The first to take the pool was Marra Johnson in the 200 Yard Breaststroke. She finished fifth overall in the event with a time of 2:35.15 in what was one of the best improvements on seed times on the day. She finished eight seconds slower than her seed time as she wrapped up a strong start to her freshman season. Mandal was next in the pool in the 200 Fly, entering the day with a seed time of 2:22.69. She finished fourth to finish her first half of the season, swimming a time of 2:18.20 to take fourth. The Cardinals saw several of their swimmers Garner top five honors in the meet as they ended the 2022 portion of their schedule on a high note.

The other swimmers on the day saw improvements in their seed times across the board. Elizabeth Strange swam in the 200 Yard Backstroke with Miller and placed 30th in the field with a time of 2:45.50. Caitlin Oltman and Maria Jones each swam in the 100 Yard Freestyle and finished 16th and 36th respectively. Both were able to lower their seed times with Oltman swimming a 56.00 and Jones swimming a 59.21 on the day. That would round out the afternoon for Wheeling as they now get ready for the 2023 portion of their schedule.

The Wheeling University Women's Swimming team returns to the pool on Saturday, January 14th when they head to a Tri-Meet with Frostburg State and West Virginia Wesleyan.
