Oberlin, OH. – On day one, the Wheeling University Women's Swimming team sent four swimmers to the finals of the Oberlin Invitational. On day two Friday, they took it to the next level sending five to the finals and three of those five to the A Finals on day two of the event. Wheeling remained ninth in the team standings but enters the final day with 345 team points.
The biggest event of the day for the Cardinals was the 400 Yard Individual Medley, where they had two A Final Qualifiers.
Sophomore Jade Miller and freshman Marra Johnson competed and both finished top five and set PRs finishing second and fifth overall. Miller dropped her time by six seconds, swimming a 4:47.53 and Johnson dropped her time by 14 seconds, swimming a 4:57.92. Both came back for the A Finals on the night Miller was able to write her name in the history books. She placed second in the field once again, swimming a 4:44.90, and was able to write her name in the history books. She posted the sixth fastest time in the event in program history as she set the PR in the event. Johnson placed fifth overall in the field with a time of 4:57.58 as she dropped her time by 34 tenths of a second.
Two events later, the Cardinals sent their next swimmer to the A Finals in the 100 Fly. Meredith Mandal took the pool and finished sixth overall with a time of 1:01.57. It was a two second drop from her seed time and qualified her for her first A Final of the event. She had her best swim of the event in that final, placing fourth in the field and dropping her time to 1:00.90, missing breaking the one minute mark by ninety tenths of a second. Freshman Caitlin Oltman was the next to qualify for the A Finals, swimming in the 200-Yard Freestyle. She started the prelims with a time of 2:01.28, five seconds lower than her seed time. She came back in the finals and finished fourth with a time of 1:59.32, breaking the two minute mark in the event for the first time in her career.
The final swim of the day came in the women's 100 Yard Backstroke as Maria Jones qualified for the first final of her career. Jones swam in the 100 Yard Backstroke and took the final spot in the C Final, finishing 24th with a time of 1:08.91. She then moved to the C Finals where she improved her positioning by three spots. She placed 21st overall in the event, and dropped her time to 1:07.57. The team's final swim of the day was the 800 Yard Freestyle Relay. The team of Miller, Mandal, Oltman, and Jones finished ninth overall with a time of 8:32.83.
