Women’s Soccer Ends Historic Season in MEC Quarterfinals Loss to Frostburg State

Frostburg, MD. – The Wheeling University Women's Soccer team began their first ever Mountain East Conference (MEC) Playoff run on Tuesday in Frostburg, Maryland. The Cardinals fought hard, but ended up falling to the #1 seeded Frostburg State Bobcats 4-0. It was the end of a a historic season for the Cardinals and the future only looks bright for Wheeling women's soccer.

In the first half, Frostburg State showed why they won the MEC North Division taking the games first seven shots. In the 8th minute one of those shots went in net as the Bobcats took a 1-0 lead early in the game. Wheeling's first Shot came in the 14th minute courtesy of Mary defonzo, but a Frostburg State shot less than a minute later found the net and made it a 2-0 Frostburg State advantage. Kenadee Burgoyne followed with her first shot of the night, but unfortunately it missed the target and the score remained 2-0 in favor of Frostburg State. Burgoyne would add the final two shots for the Cardinals in the half in the 19th and 36th minute, but neither found the net. Frostburg State added a goal in the 19th minute and would head into the locker room ahead by that 3-0 score.

In the game's second half, both teams were looking for that first advantage, with no shots in the first six minutes of play. Wheeling nearly scored in the 51st and 52nd minutes with a pair of shots that were saved by Frostburg State. Braedynn Porter sent her first shot on net in the 51st minute and fired a second one on the rebound in the 52nd minute. However, both shots were saved by the Bobcats goalkeeper and the score remained 3-0. Another Cardinal shot went on net in the 59th minute, courtesy of Alaina Carro, but once again the shot was saved. Frostburg State would add one final goal in the 79th minute, and would go on to win the game by that 4-0 score. The Cardinals fought hard, taking seven second half shots, putting four on goal, but just couldn't get on the board.

Braedynn Porter and Kenadee Burgoyne led the offense with three shots each in the game, with Porter putting three on net compared to one for Burgoyne. Alaina Carro and Mary DiFonzo each took two shots, putting one on net, and Landree Wilkin added a shot to round out the offense. Mikayla Yarwood got the start in net and made eight saves on 12 shots faced in the loss. While their playoff run was short lived, it was still a historic season for the Cardinals with lots of promise ahead for the program.

The Wheeling University Women's Soccer team ends their 2022 season and heads into the off-season with lots of promise ahead for the program.
