Volleyball Opens Homecoming Festivities with Sweep of Concord

Box Score Wheeling, W. Va. – The annual Homecoming & Family Weekend opened up on Friday when the Wheeling Volleyball team (13-6, 6-0) hosted Concord inside the Alma Grace McDonough Center. It was a big night for the offense as they combined for a .260 hitting percentage on their way to defeating Concord 3-0. Several different Cardinals got in on the action on offense, with 10 different Cardinals finishing with atleast one kill in the set.

After Concord scored the first point of set one, Wheeling would take control scoring seven of the next eight points. They extended their lead to 11-3 with a pair of service aces from Cameron Zinn and Mady Winters added a kill to make it 14-6. The ryb that put the game out of reach came at the end of the set when Cassidey Wiley got a kill to spark a 10-0 run that brought things to set point at 24-8. The Mountain Lions got a point back to make it 24-9, but Wheeling would end it on the next play. Cassidey Wiley would once again get her number called and smacked down the final kill of the night and Wheeling walked away with a 25-9 set victory. They got our to a strong start and looked to keep their momentum rolling.

Set two began with a Wheeling service error that made it 1-0 Concord before Wheeling went on their biggest run of the night. An attack error gave the ball back to Wheeling and they would go on a 17-0 run that blew the set open. Sophomore Aly Finch would pick up all four kills on the run and the Cardinals were out to a 17-1 lead. However, Concord continued battling and outscored Wheeling 8-3 to bring the set to 20-8. They got to within 11 points of Wheeling before the Cardinals ended the set on a 3-0 run. Lindsey James would get the kill to start the run and a pair of Mountain Lions attack errors brought the set to 25-11 and the Cardinals took a 2-0 lead in the set.

In the third set, Head Coach Christy Benner went to her bench as she got some other players in the game. It was the most competitive and Lexi Smith and Cassidey Wiley got the scoring started. At the halfway point, the score sat at 16-14 in favor of Wheeling as the Cardinals looked to make a run. It got close, with the score sitting at 20-19 before the run finally came. Alyson Cunningham would get a kill to start the run and the Cardinals scored the final five points of the set. Raegan Rosi would finish things out with the final two kills and Wheeling won 25-19. They would end up sweeping the match 3-0 and earning their sixth Conference Ewing of the season, while starting Homecoming & Family weekend with a bang.

No Cardinals finished in double digit kills on the day, but a pair of Cardinals players led the way. Cassidet Wiley led the way with a career-best seven kills and Aly Findg followed right behind her with six. Karly Niesen once again led the offense with 17 assists and she was followed closely behind by Cameron Zinn, who finished with 15 assists. Raegan Rosi led the defense with 13 Digs while Chylyn Pate added 10 Digs on the night. It was the first of two matches for the Cardinals this weekend as they get set to host Glenville State tomorrow.
