Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Afolayanka Accounts for Offense in Loss to Charleston

Charleston, W. Va. – The Wheeling University Men's Soccer team (4-7-1, 4-5-1)  wrapped up tonight's soccer double header in Charleston, West Virginia, when they took on the Golden Eagles. The offense couldn't get anything going on the night and they ended up falling to Charleston 6-1. The Cardinals were able to ink a goal in the 76th minute of the game, but got off just four shots on the night.

In the game's first half, the ball spent a lot of time on the Charleston side of the field, with Wheeling only able to get one shot throughout the half. That shot didn't come until the game's 40th minute when freshman Cole Congson sent one out left towards the net. Prior to that shot, the Golden Eagles had already put two goals of their own on the board and had Wheeling behind. Two minutes later, Charleston was back at it with their third goal of the day and Wheeling headed into the locker room trailing 3-0. The Cardinals were outshot 12-1 in that first half and were looking for a spark to get the offense going.

However, the Charleston offense just kept coming and scored the first two goals of the second half to take a 5-0 lead. After their fifth goal of the day, Wheeling took the opening kick-off and got called for offsides. They were able to take the ball back and Richard Afolayanka made his way up the field. He was able to send the ball into the lower corner of the net that made it a 5-1 game. It was Afolayanka's fourth goal of the year and he sits second on the team in goals this season. Charleston added one more goal on the day and brought the score to 6-1. The Cardinals would be unable to get back on the board throughout the night and fell by that same 6-1 score.

Richard Afolayanka led the offense with the lone goal on one shot throughout the night. Cole Congson would be the only Cardinal to finish with multiple shots in the game, taking two shots and putting one of those shots on goal. The final shot of the day came from Miguel Martin as he rounded out the offense. Austin Aaron got the start in net and made five saves on 11 shots faced throughout the night.

The Wheeling University Men's Soccer team returns to action on Saturday, October 8th, when they host Frostburg State at 7:30 PM.
