Wheeling, W. Va. - As the calendar rolls into October, the Wheeling University Athletic Department announced their weekly Cardinal High Flyer of the Week awards on Tuesday. After big performances over the weekend, Women's Cross Country's Savanaugh Anderson and Football's Matt Greenwood took home this week's honors. Greenwood had a big day kicking the football and Anderson produced the top 5K time in the conference this past week.
Savanaugh Anderson and her team ran in one of the biggest Cross Country events in the Country when they competed at the Live the Lou Cross Country Classic. Out of over 400 runners in the field, Anderson placed 20th, running a 19:23.3. The mark was the fastest 5K time in the Mountain East Conference (MEC) this past week as she was one of three Cardinal runners to break the 19-minute mark. At the first checkpoint of the day, Anderson found herself in 30th place and was looking for a way to fight back. She got all the way up to 18th in the field by the 2/3 mark and regressed two spots over the final third to finish 20th. Anderson continues to improve her time each race she competes in and is looking to be a top 10 runner in the conference this season.
For Matt Greenwood, he accounted for just under half of his team's points in their 37-0 win over West Virginia Wesleyan this week. When the offense had trouble getting things going early on, Greenwood would knock through a 26-yard field goal with 1:24 left in the first quarter to make it a 3-0 Cardinal lead. He did the same at the end of the second quarter to make it 6-0 before adding his longest kick of the day, a 40-yard field goal to start the fourth quarter. Greenwood was also perfect in PAT attempts throughout the night, going 4-4 to total 13 points on the day. Greenwood has been solid throughout his Cardinal's career and looks to continue that as the season goes on.
Both athletes are earning their first Cardinal High Flyer of the Week awards this season. For the Wheeling Women's Cross Country team, it is their first High Flyer of the Week award winner while Wheeling Football has its third member crowned as Athlete of the Week. With Homecoming weekend coming up this weekend, there are sure to be a lot of big moments on the home courts and fields throughout the weekend.
The next Wheeling University Athletic Event will be tomorrow when the Wheeling Women's Golf team competes in day three of the MEC Championships, with tee-off scheduled for 12 PM.
