Wheeling, W. Va. - After a big conference sweep on Friday night, the Wheeling University volleyball team (21-7, 12-1) was back in the gymnasium on Saturday as they honored their seniors on senior day. The Cardinals came through with their second sweep of the weekend taking down Bluefield State 3-0. The win moved wheeling to 21-7 overall and 20-3 in Region play as they come down to the final week of the regular season.
The big blue got the match started with the first two points of set one before wheeling battled back to tie it at 4-4. Bluefield State took the lead back on the next point but a Mady Winters kill evened it up at 5-5. A 7-1 Cardinal Run opened things up and gave Wheeling a 12-6 advantage. During the run, freshman Melia Gorrell picked up two services and started what was a strong day for the Wheeling servers. The Wheeling offense would continue to tack on throughout the set until they led 20-9 in the later portion. However the big blue continued to battle, scoring six of the next eight points, bringing the set to 23-15. The Cardinals would then gain set point at 24-16 and
Allonda Watkins kill ended the set and gave Wheeling a 25-16 set win.
Set two saw the Cardinals offense scored the first two points as they took control early on. With The set tied at 2-2, Riley Kindall slapped down a kill that got a 9-1 run going in favor of the Cardinals. Another Cardinal server shined on the run, with freshman Cameron Zinn coming through with two service aces during the run and Wheeling led 12-3. Gorrell would add her third service ace of the night in the next run as Wheeling scored five of the next six points and had a 17-5 lead in the later part of the set. However, Bluefield State would not go down without fighting as they battled back and made it a 23-14 game late in the second set. The comeback came a little too late as Aly Finch slammed down a kill and an attack error gave Wheeling a 25-14 set two win and a 2-0 lead in the match.
In set three, the Cardinals went with a little bit of a different lineup sending in some of their bench players to start the set. The Cardinals were still able to have success scoring 10 of the first 12 points behind great serving from senior Jordan West. During the run, Finch registered four kills along with a kill from Cassidy Wiley as Wheeling went up 10-2. Another Zinn service ace, her 3rd of the day, made it an 11-2 wheeling advantage and they would leave 13-5 a few points later. The Cardinals back line would play strong throughout the night and held Bluefield State to just 12 points in the set. With set point sitting at 24-12, Wiley would finish things off with the final kill to give Wheeling a 25-12 set win and a 3-0 win for the match.
While no Cardinals finished with double digit kills on the day, the team was lead by two of their seniors honored before the night in
Tylah Yeomans and
Allonda Watkins, each finished with nine kills while Watkins led the way with an impressive .571 hitting percentage. However, the servers were the star of the night with the team registering a season high seven services. Freshman Melia Gorrell led the way with four service aces while fellow freshman Cameron Zinn added three. Gorrell also led the defense with nine digs followed closely by
Karly Niesen and Riley Kindall, who each had eight on the night.
The Wheeling University volleyball team now Heads into the final week of regular season play on the road to the MEC playoffs. They hit the road for their first match of the week when they face Alderson Broaddus with tip off at 7:00 p.m
