Bethany, W. Va. - The Wheeling University Women's Swimming team continued their string of road events to start the season when they headed to Bethany College on Friday night. It was their first dual meet of the year, and the Cardinals came out on top with a 155-32 to secure their first victory of the season. In total, the women competed in 13 events on the night and would pick up wins in each of those 13 events.
The individual events kicked off with the distance events as Gabby Baiano took the pool for the second time this season. She would get the night started off with a win, swimming an 11:23.75 and earning nine points for her team. The shorter events followed with the 200 Yard Freestyle and the 100 Yard Backstroke. Wheeling would take the top two spots in the 200 Yard Freestyle, with Caitlin Oltman finishing first (2:08.70) and Meredith Mandal finishing second (2:16.75). In the Backstroke, sophomore Jade Miller took the pool for the first time and got her first win of the day with a time of 1:01.69, followed by Elizabeth strange in third with a time of 1:16.44. In the 100 Yard Breaststroke, Marra Johnson picked up her first collegiate win, swimming a 1:15.15.
The Cardinals had the only competitor in the 200 Yard Butterfly, so Mandal took home her first win of the night with a time of 2:22.69. The 59 Yard Freestyle was up next and Marra Johnson took home her first collegiate win, swimming a 27.94. Event 15 of the day was the 100 Yard Freestyle and the Cardinals had two swimmers in the event. As Oltman and Maria Jones took the top two spots with times of 1:00.72 and 1:02.53. Jade Miller took home had second win of the day in the 200 Yard Backstroke, swimming a 2:18.84 and Strange took home her second third place finish at 2:43.97.
The final three events of the day were the 500 Yard Freestyle, the 400 Yard Individual Medley, and the 100 Yard Butterfly. Marra Johnson, Jade Miller, and Gabby Baiano each picked up their second wins of the day to finalize the individual events. The only relay events on the day for the Cardinals was the 200 Yard Medley Relay, featuring Miller, Oltman, Johnson, and Jones. They ended up winning the event with a time of 2:03.75 and added 11 points to their team score.
After a week off next week, the Wheeling University Women's Swimming team returns to action on Friday, November 11th when they host Salem at 5 PM.
