Elkins, W. Va. - The Wheeling University Volleyball team (17-7, 11-1) wrapped up their weekend road trip on Saturday when they headed to Elkins, West Virginia to take on Davis & Elkins. The offense led the way throughout the day as the Cardinals claimed a 3-0 victory to finish the weekend with a sweep. After clinching a playoff spot yesterday, it was a big win for the Cardinals as they keep their momentum going for the stretch run towards the tournament.
Over the first few points of set one, things were close as Wheeling trailed 4-3 in the early going. However, that wouldn't last long as an attack error gave the ball back to Wheeling and took them on a 6-0 run that put them out in front 9-4. Wheeling would continue to score throughout the afternoon, extending their lead to 13-8 by the midway point. The run that sealed the first set came next as a Senator's attack error once again gave Wheeling the ball and they would score the next six points to go ahead 19-8. The Cardinals would bring it to set point at 24-12 and an attack error ended things and gave Wheeling a 25-12 set one win.
In set two, the Senators once again scored the first point, but things were tied up at 4-4 in the early going. The score would remain close for a little longer in this one, as the Cardinals held a 10-8 advantage at the midway point of the set. A kill by
Riley Kindall would kick-off a short 5-2 run that created separation and gave the Cardinals a 15-10 lead. The big run came just a few points later when the Cardinals scored seven straight points to go ahead 22-11. Davis & Elkins began to battle back, scoring four of the next six points, but it was set point Wheeling at 24-16.
Tylah Yeomans brought the set to a close with a kill and Wheeling took the set 25-16. With a 2-0 lead on their hands, the Cardinals were looking to bring it home in the third set to complete the weekend.
The Cardinals would go on to score the first point of the third set and did much more putting up the first seven points of the set. They extended that lead to 11-1 before the run was over and had control of the third set. Davis & Elkins would put together two runs in the set, the first coming in the form of a 5-1 run that made it a 12-6 set. Then, once Wheeling made it set point at 24-15, the Senators refused to go down. They scored the next four points to make it a 24-15 set. However, their rally would come to an end when
Jordan West knocked down a kill and gave Wheeling the 25-15 win and a 3-0 sweep of the match.
Leading the offense for the Cardinals was a pair of strikers in
Tylah Yeomans and
Riley Kindall, who each finished with 10 kills on the day.
Allonda Watkins continued her strong season with eight kills and
Mady Winters finished right behind her with six kills to end the night. The Cardinals hit over the .300 mark for the second straight game, and setter
Karly Niesen led them with 29 assists on the day. Leading the defense was
Jordan West, who finished with nine digs, and Kindall and Niesen would also play big on defense, with seven digs.
