Cardinals Earn Weekend Sweep as Volleyball Downs Malone

Canton, OH. – The Wheeling University Volleyball team played the second of their two weekend matches when they battled Malone on Saturday. The Cardinals were able to sweep the match and sweep the weekend as they took down the Pioneers 3-0. Allonda Watkins and Tylah Yeomans each had big days on offense as they led the team's offensive attack.

After dropping the first set to Notre Dame College yesterday, the Cardinals knew they had to come out strong in their second game of the weekend. They did just that as a service error by Malone started the game and Wheeling would go on to score the first five points of the set. Malone would then battle back to make it a two-point set, but the Cardinals offense would start again. This time, they went on an 11-3 run that made it an 18-8 set as they headed into the later half. The Cardinals would hold set point at 24-18 and Malone would stay alive with a kill to make it 24-19. However, the comeback would be stopped their as Tylah Yeomans smacked down a kill and Wheeling took the opening set 25-19.

The start of set two had the opposite start of set one, with Malone scoring the first three points of the set. However, the Cardinals stormed back on a 7-1 run after an Allonda Watkins kill that gave the Cardinals a 7-4 lead. Malone would then go on a run that tied the set 10-10 and the Cardinals looked for a way to get the steak going. Watkins would get that run going again with a kill and the Cardinals scored six straight to go ahead 16-10 in the set, a lead that would hold for good. The Pioneers would add two points  before Wheeling got going again with a 7-1 run that made it a 23-13 set. Yeomans recorded a kill that brought up set point and an attack error sealed the 25-16 set win for the Cardinals. They now lead 2-0 in the match and we're looking for the sweep.

Set three once again saw the Cardinals get off to a fast start, scoring seven of the first 10 points to take a 7-3 lead. Malone battled back to make it a 7-6 set before Wheeling went on another run, this time a 9-2 run, that made it an 18-10 set. The Cardinals would add another 4-1 run late in the set that pushed the score to 24-14 and gave Wheeling set point. Malone would stay alive with two points that made it 24-16 and Mady Winters slammed down the final kill of the night to give Wheeling the 25-16 win and the 3-0 sweep in the match. The Cardinals improved to 11-6 overall on the season and head back home with momentum on their side as they prepare for their first edition of the "Battle for Wheeling" on Tuesday night.

Allonda Watkins led the offensive attack with 17 kills, her second highest total of the season. Tylah Yeomans finished behind her with 15 kills and Mady Winters added 10 kills to round out the Cardinals double digit kill effort. Setter Karly Niesen copied her effort from Friday night with 51 assists and 1 kill on the night. Riley Kindall led the defensive effort with 15 digs followed by Chylyn Pate with 13 digs of her own. The Cardinals continued their success into October as the calendar changed  and they begin the run to the 2022 MEC Tournament.

The Wheeling University Volleyball team is back in action on Tuesday, October 4th, when they host West Liberty at 7 PM.
