Wheeling, W. Va. - On Friday, it was announced that the Wheeling University Wrestling team's away match against Fairmont State on Saturday has been postponed due to health and safety concerns. Both athletic departments will be working together in order to reschedule the match for a date to be determined.
The Wheeling Wrestling team is coming off their first Mountain East Conference (MEC) dual meet of the season on Thursday when they fell to Notre Dame College 44-6. Wheeling had three different wrestlers compete in matches, with their only win coming via forfeit in the 133-pound weight class by Chase Montgomery. Christian Zickefoose (125-Pound), Austin Mele (167-Pound), and Clarouly Meca (285-Pound) all wrestled on the night and competed in their matches.
Zickefoose and Meca had the two most exciting matches of the night, the first to start the event and the second to close it out. Zickefoose started things off wrestling in the 125-pound weight class and fell in a medical forfeit. He had the lead in the early going of the match but suffered the injury towards the end of the second period. Meca similarly had a lead and was ahead 4-2 after two periods of play. However, he got outscored 5-0 in the final period and ended up falling 7-4.
The Wheeling University Wrestling team will take the mat again next Friday, January 21st, when they travel to Davis & Elkins for their second dual match of the year. The match is set to begin at 6 PM.
