59 Wheeling Cardinals Land on All-MEC Academic Team

Bridgeport, W. Va. - As the Mountain East Conference (MEC) announces their academic honors on Tuesday, they presented their All-MEC Academic Team. The Wheeling University Athletic Department had 59 student-athletes make the list, beating last year's number by 22 players. Wheeling placed 115 student-athletes on the Commissioner's Honor Roll, and more than half of those players appear on the All-MEC Academic Team.

To qualify for the All-MEC Academic Team, a player must be a member of the active roster and and have a grade point average between 3.70-and 4.0 in the semester of their championship season. Wheeling had the fourth most members on the All-Academic team in the conference, finishing behind The University of Charleston (85), West Liberty (64), and West Virginia Wesleyan (60). Once again, all eight of Wheeling's MEC affiliated Fall sports were represented on the list as Wheeling student-athletes continue to display excellence in the classroom.

Once again, the football team led the way with 29 members making the All-MEC Academic team this season. They were followed by Volleyball, who had eight members, Men's Soccer, who had seven, and Women's Soccer, who had six. Rounding out the list were Women's Cross Country (4), Women's Golf (3), Men's Golf (1), and Men's Cross Country (1).

Overall, 615 players across the MEC's 11 institutions made the All-MEC Academic team, as they puruse excellence both on the field and in the classroom. For these students, they show a high dedication to getting their degree, and proving themselves as an all-around student-athlete. Wheeling strives to help its students discover their full potential through the three core values of Life, Leadership, and Service With and Among Others. These student-athletes are leaders both on the field and in the classroom representing Wheeling University.
