Wheeling, W. Va. – For the second week in a row, the Wheeling University Men's Golf team will be teeing off at Davis & Elkins College. Round one will be played on Monday followed by round two on Tuesday, and it is the final invitaional before the Mountain East Conference Championships next week.
The top golfer on the Men's team this season has been sophomore
Yadhu Urs (Castries, St. Lucia/Saint Marys). Urs has shot an 80 or better at each of the first three invitations of the year, with his best performance coming at the Vulcan Invitational during the first week of the season. While Urs has been the leader of this young group of golfers, there is a newcomer who is making his mark on the team.
That newcomer is
Blake Ring-Fish who, much like Urs, has also been right at or below the 80 mark in each of his first three events. Ring-Fish shot a team-best 79 on day two of the University of Charleston Invitational, and has a collegiate best score of 77 during the first invitational of the year.
Nick Zaller (Mentor, OH./Mentor) is the veteran of the group, and rounds out the top three shooting anywhere from the mid to low 80s in the first three invitationals of the year.
This two-day even will be the last event before the MEC Championships, which run from October 4
th through the 6
th at Avalon Lakes. While Wheeling may not be a team that makes a splash in the overall standings, it will be a big event to get some of the young golfers on the team some experience at big events. Then, they can take that experience with them into the off-season and prepare to keep the program moving forward in the long run.
The Match-up
The last time that Wheeling competed at the Wally Edge Invitational was back during the 2016 season. In that event, they finished eighth as a team, and had one finisher in the top 30 of the event. That golfer was former Cardinal Azam Khan who shot a 240 at the three-round event, posting scores of 79-80-81 over the three rounds.
The Details
Tee-off for the two day Davis & Elkins college event is scheduled for 10 AM Monday. They will follow with round 2 on Tuesday with another morning tee time.
