Women’s Soccer Back in Action After Wild Win

Women's Soccer looks to build off the win over NDC

Wheeling, W. Va- After a wild win last time out, the Wheeling University Women's Soccer team (2-3, 1-2) heads back out on the road when they take on Alderson Broaddus on Sunday at 2 PM. Wheeling picked up its first win in the last 16 tries against the Falcons last time out and is hoping that momentum follows them into Philippi, West Virginia.

The last time the Women's soccer team took the field was at home against Notre Dame College Wednesday night. Going into that game the Cardinals had never beaten Notre Dame College and were on a 16-game losing streak to the Falcons. They ended the streak in a come-from-behind fashion, with the final score being 3-2.

In the first 17 minutes, both teams jumped on the board twice, and for a good majority of the game, the score was 2-2. Then in the 76th minute, Wheeling was able to get the goal they needed with a corner kick from the far corner of the endzone. Senior Lainey Brown took the corner kick and hit the ball to senior Kenadee Burgoyne as the ball bounced off her body and went to the middle of the field. Freshman Talynn DeBartolo was positioned perfectly, and once the ball came, she took her shot, hitting it over the goalkeeper of Notre Dame. This goal gave the Cardinals a 3-2 lead, and for the final 14 minutes of the game, Wheeling would hold on to the ball earning the first win over Notre Dame College. This win was also the first MEC win since the spring season over Frostburg State College.

Wheeling now sits in fifth place in the MEC North Division and is just one game behind Notre Dame College for the fourth-place spot. They face an Alderson Broaddus team that sits just below them in the standings at 0-4 in MEC play and are hoping to get the edge on them and continue their climb up the standings.

The Match-up

The Cardinals and the Battlers have a history with each other dating back to 2008. They've faced off six different times, with the Battlers winning five of those games. The last match-up with Alderson Broaddus was in the fall of 2019, and the Cardinals fell short, losing 5-1. Their only win against the Battlers came in the first game between the two teams back in September of 2008 when Wheeling won 7-0 in Philippi.

In the most recent contest, the Battlers got the better of Wheeling, allowing just a first-half goal in the team's 5-1 loss. The lone Cardinal goal was scored by Kenadee Burgoyne in the 27th minute. She scored on an assist from former Cardinal Kendra Benzel. Alderson Broaddus would go on to score four unanswered goals after that and had the momentum squarely on their side for the remainder of the game.
