Men's Soccer Drops Close Match to Gannon

Wheeling, W. Va. – The Wheeling University Men's Soccer team (3-3, 2-2) took on #15 Gannon University on Sunday at Bishop Schmitt Field. It was a close contest throughout, but Gannon scored two second half goals to down the Cardinals 2-0.

During the first half of the game, the two teams were pretty evenly matched with Gannon outshooting Wheeling 7-6. Harry Firth made his second start of the season in net, and made some big saves early in the game. He made five first half saves to keep the Golden Knights off the board and the offense would take advantage with some opportunities in the Gannon offensive zone. However, things were starting to get chippy with nine total fouls in the first half.

The Cardinals biggest shot in that first half came in the 23rd minute when Gannon's goalkeeper received a Yellow Card. This brought Simen Moksnes up for a Penalty Kick, and a chance to put Wheeling on the board. Unfortunately, he best the goalkeeper, but hit it just too far to the left as it caromed off the goal post keeping the score at 0-0.

Despite the back-and-forth, the team's made it to halftime with the score sitting at 0-0. There were only two yellow cards given out in the first half, but the chippiness would continue into the second half.  It started when Gannon netted their first goal of the day in the 50th minute. Tinashi Katsande would score, putting the Golden Knights up 1-0. There would be four yellow cards handed out during the next 10 minutes of play and six total cards handed out over the next 20 minutes.

Then, Wheeling received a pair of red cards in the 69th minute to complete the arguments as TJ Cherry and Head Coach Jim Regan got tossed from the game. Cannon would add their final goal in the 71st minute when Katsande netted his second goal of the game on a pass from Gannon's Herman Aanberg. The score made it 2-0, and would remain that way for the rest of the day as Wheeling dropped to 3-3 on the season.

The offensive attack was pretty spread out for the Cardinals with 10 different players getting off at least one shot on the day. Richard Afolayanka led the team with three shots taken, but only put one on goal. Miguel Martin and Hugo Rodriguez led the team in shots on goal with two apiece. With finished the day with five saves while allowing two goal, both in the second half. Wheeling now drops to 3-3 on the season, but return to Mountain East Conference (MEC) play the rest of the way.

The Wheeling University Men's Soccer team is back in action on Wednesday when they go on the road to face West Liberty at 7:30 PM.
