Big First Half Leads Rugby to Win Over IUP

Indiana, PA. - The Wheeling University Rugby team kept their momentum going on Saturday as they beat Indiana University of Pennsylvania 45-10. The Cardinals scored a total of six tries on the day and used a big first half to roll to the victory.

The team was led by a big day from sophomore Ayoub Jalli (Cassablanca, Morroco/Yassmine Oasis). Jalli scored two tries, three conversion kicks, and two penalty kicks in the victory. Jalli did not score a try in the first game of the season, but now has a team-high 11 conversion kicks over his first two games played.

It was a strong first half for Wheeling as they got out to a commanding 22-3 lead at halftime. The defense was strong throughout the afternoon and gave up just seven second-half points. Four different players scored tries on the afternoon including two more for sophomore Mohammed Haddar (Marrakech, Morroco/Les Printemps) bringing his season total to a team-high six. The final two tries we're scored by sophomore Josh Blankenship (Las Vegas, NV./Liberty HS) and freshman Tinomukudza Chipfumbu.

Head Coach Mike Geibel was once again impressed by his team's performance and looks for them to continue to grow.

"I am happy to see our attack structure click a bit better than last week. We still have some things to tighten up, but each week we get better and fix some of the mistakes from the previous week. We'll do the same this week and prepare for a big WVU team who will by physical like IUP."

The Wheeling University Rugby team opens the home half of their schedule when they battle West Virginia University next Saturday at 6 PM at Bishop Schmitt Field.
