Wheeling knocked off by Fairmont State, 2-1

WHEELING, W.Va. (April 9) - The Wheeling University women's soccer team was defeated 2-1 by Fairmont State Friday evening.

THE RUNDOWN

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Falcons netted the first goal in the 15th-minute on a header in the box to take a 1-0 lead.
  • Fairmont State scored again just over five minutes later to put the Cardinals in a 2-0 hole.
  • Wheeling got on the board in the second half. Senior Paige Orbell (Severn, Md./Old Mill) dribbled into the offensive zone and left the ball off to junior Braedynn Porter (Mineral Ridge, Ohio/Mineral Ridge).
  • Porter collected the ball and found a streaking Kendra Benzel (Bernville, Pa./Tulpehocken) towards the far post who finished to make the score 2-1 in the 64th-minute.
  • The Cardinals made a furious push in the final 15 minutes, but Fairmont State kept the lead and dealt Wheeling the loss.
MATCH NOTES
  • Junior goalkeeper Mikayla Yarwood (Surrey, British Columbia/Clayton Heights) made a pair of saves in the first half.
  • Freshman goalkeeper Jaci Wilson (Rootstown, Ohio/St. Thomas Aquinas) played the second half and made a trio of saves.
