Walk-off home run helps Cardinals split with Notre Dame

WHEELING, W.Va. (April 30) – A walk-off home run in game one helped push the Cardinals to a 3-2 game one win and a split with Notre Dame (Ohio) Friday afternoon in the team's season and Mountain East Conference (MEC) finale.

The Wheeling University softball team closes out the 2021 season at 10-32 overall, 9-23 in the MEC. The Cardinals picked up a pair of forfeit wins with Alderson Broaddus that will go down in the league record, but not the team's overall mark.

Notre Dame (14-24, 13-17 MEC) led 2-1 in the fifth inning when sophomore Gina Fogle (Toronto, Ohio/Toronto) tied the game up with a solo home run.

After the next six Falcons were retired in order, freshman Cassi Roman (Chino Hills, Calif./Ayala) led the bottom of the seventh off with a walk-off home run to give Wheeling a 3-2 win.

Redshirt-freshman pitcher Abby Bumbico (Martins Ferry, Ohio/Martins Ferry) limited Notre Dame to two runs on six hits to improve to 2-2 on the season.

Fogle finished with two hits, including a home run, while junior Heather Pinney (North Canton, Ohio/North Canton) went 3-for-3 with an RBI.

The Falcons broke open a 2-1 game two in the fourth inning with eight runs to deal Wheeling a 13-4 loss in the season finale.

Pinney led the team with two more hits, including a home run, in the loss.
