WHEELING, W.Va. (April 26) – The Cardinals got a walk-off home run in game one and a nine-run inning in game two to propel them to a pair of wins to complete a four-game sweep of Notre Dame College in Mountain East Conference (MEC) play Monday.
Wheeling (23-8, 19-5 MEC) rallied to walk-off the Falcons (12-18, 9-13 MEC) 7-5 in game one, before powering its way to a 12-9 victory in game two.
Earlier in the day it was announced by the National Collegiate Baseball Writers of America (NCBWA) that the Cardinals jumped back into the Atlantic Region Poll at No. 10 after a two-week hiatus.
The Cardinals led 4-2 heading into the top of the seventh inning of game one, but the Falcons plated three runs on two hits with the help of an error to push Wheeling into a 5-4 deficit.
In the bottom of the seventh, freshman
Pete Toula (Sagamore Hills, Ohio/Nordonia) reached on an error and scored on an RBI-single by junior
Jack Skantze (Clearwater, Fla./Countryside) to tie the game.
The next batter, junior
Riley Cameron (Vass, N.C./Union Pines), took the first pitch he saw and sent it over the left field fence for a walk-off home run to give the Cardinals the win.
Senior
Luis Dominguez (Bronx, N.Y./Cardinal Spellman) led the team with two hits, including a double, and three RBIs. Cameron and Skantze each had two hits and two runs scored, while sophomore
Lucas Rawlins (Columbus, Ohio/Bishop Hartley) added an RBI-double.
The two teams combined for 22 hits in game two, but a nine-run fourth inning helped push the Cardinals to a 12-9 win to complete the series sweep.
Wheeling trailed 6-2 heading into the bottom of the fourth. The Cardinals loaded the bases with no outs and tied the game on two hits and an error, before an RBI-single by Dominguez gave Wheeling a 7-6 lead.
After a pair of outs and a walk loaded the bases once again, senior
Bryen Kimbrough (Southhampton, Pa./Pennsbury) hit a grand slam home run to make the score 11-6.
The Cardinals led 12-9 in the ninth inning when the Falcons but the first two batters on base. Sophomore relief pitcher
Connor Pinsker (Highland, Ill./Highland) got the next three batters out to preserve the win and the sweep.
Kimbrough went 3-for-4 with a double and the grand slam. Skantze and Cameron each added two hits and an RBI in the win.
Sophomore pitcher
Cameron Madden (Cincinnati, Ohio/Badin) picked up the win in relief. Madden (3-5) went three-plus innings and allowed three runs (two earned) on two hits with a strikeout.
Wheeling will play for the fifth time in three days when it travels to Indiana University of Pennsylvania for a non-conference nine inning game tomorrow, Tuesday, April 27 at 1 p.m.
