Cards fall twice at Charleston

CHARLESTON, W.Va. (April 2) – The Wheeling University baseball team was swept by regionally-ranked Charleston Friday afternoon in a Mountain East Conference (MEC) doubleheader.

HOW IT HAPPENED in Game 1
  • The Cardinals were limited to two hits and left five on base in the team's 2-0 loss in game one.
  • Charleston took the lead with a run in the first and added an insurance run in the fourth.
  • Wheeling junior pitcher Logan Pillars (Rock Falls, Ill./Rock Falls) fell to 2-2 on the season, but had a strong outing.
  • Pillars limited the Golden Eagles to two runs on five hits and struck out three in a complete-game effort.
  • Charleston's Logan Campbell (5-0) held the Wheeling offense in check. He struck out 11 and allowed two hits and one walk to earn the win.
HOW IT HAPPENED in Game 2
  • The Cardinals trailed 3-0 after one inning, but the offense finally broke through in the second.
  • Wheeling plated two runs with the help of an error to make the score 2-0.
  • Senior third baseman Luis Dominguez (Bronx, N.Y./Cardinal Spellman) delivered a two-out single in the third inning to tie the game up at 3-3.
  • The contest remained tied at 3-3 heading into the bottom of the fifth inning.
  • Charleston drew four walks and batted through the order on its way to an eight-run inning.
  • The Golden Eagles tacked on one more in the sixth to put the game away.
GAME NOTES
  • Dominguez, sophomore Lucas Rawlins (Pickerington, Ohio/Bishop Hartley) and senior Bryen Kimbrough (Southhampton, Pa./Pennsbury) each drove in a run.
  • Junior pitcher Cameron Madden (Cincinnati, Ohio/Badin) was tagged with the loss on the mound.
  • Madden (1-4) allowed five runs on four hits over four-plus innings of work.
UP NEXT
  • Wheeling will face its second regionally-ranked foe on the road in as many days when it takes on West Virginia State on Saturday, April 3.
  • The first-pitch of game one of the doubleheader with the Yellow Jackets is set for 1 p.m.
