Wheeling scores 29 runs to complete four-game sweep at Frostburg State

FROSTBURG, Md. (April 18) – The Cardinals scored 29 runs to complete a four-game sweep of Frostburg State Sunday afternoon in a Mountain East Conference (MEC) doubleheader Sunday.

The Wheeling University baseball team took game one 14-5, before needing extra innings to secure a 15-11 win in game two.

The Cardinals remain atop the MEC North Standings with a 15-5 record in conference play, 19-8 overall.  Meanwhile, the Bobcats fall to 8-17 overall, 6-11 in league play.

The 19 wins matches the single-season record for wins by a Cardinal team. The 2010 and 2012 teams each won 19 games.

Wheeling scored in six of the seven innings and pounded out 19 hits in game one to take a 14-5 win in game one.

Six Cardinals finished with multiple hits, including a perfect 4-for-4 performance from junior designated hitter Chris Iazzetta (Clinton, N.J./IMG Academy). Iazzetta doubled and scored three times with two RBIs in the win.

Sophomore first baseman Lucas Rawlins (Pickerington, Ohio/Bishop Hartley) collected three hits and drove in four runs. Sophomore catcher Riley Cameron (Vass, N.C./Union Pines) had three hits, including a double, with two runs scored.

Wheeling took an 11-0 lead through the top of the fourth inning behind the power of two three-run home runs by Iazzetta.

Frostburg State scored 11-unanswered runs to tie the game up with two outs in the seventh inning to force extras.

After a scoreless eighth inning, Wheeling scored on a wild pitch and plated three more on a three-run bomb by junior Jacob Murray (Bealsville, Ohio/Linsly) to take a 15-11 lead.

Junior relief pitcher Albert Baez (Fort Worth, Texas/Timber Creek) threw two scoreless innings to improve to 4-0 on the season. He allowed one hit and walked one with two strikeouts to earn the win.

Iazzetta finished with four hits, including a double and two home runs, six RBIs and two runs scored to lead the Cards.
