Cardinals split with regional-power Mercyhurst

NUTTER FORT, W.Va. (March 6) – The Wheeling University baseball team earned a split with regional-power Mercyhurst Saturday in a neutral site doubleheader.

HOW IT HAPPENED in Game 1
  • The Cardinals took the lead early on a RBI-double by Jacob Murray (Bealsville, Ohio/Linsly) in the first inning.
  • After Mercyhurst tied the game in the top of the third, sophomore catcher Riley Cameron (Vass, N.C./Union Pines) went yard for a two-run home run in the bottom of the inning.
  • The Lakers managed to draw within one at 3-2 with a run in the fifth, but a solo home run by senior Luis Dominguez (Bronx, N.Y./Cardinal Spellman) gave the Cardinals all the insurance they needed.
GAME NOTES
  • Sophomore pitcher Jared Naida (Cleveland, Ohio/Lakewood) limited Mercyhurst to two runs on seven hits with four strikeouts over five innings of work.
  • Senior relief pitcher Nick Luciano (Apollo, Pa./Kiski Area) pitched a pair of scoreless innings to earn the save.
  • Murray led the team with two hits and an RBI at the dish.
  • Junior Jack Skantze (Clearwater, Fla./Countryside) came around to score twice.
  • Mercyhurst was receiving votes in the latest National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association (NCBWA) Top-25 poll.
HOW IT HAPPENED in Game 2
  • The Cardinals got off to a nice start with runs in each of the first two innings to take a 2-0 lead.
  • Mercyhurst answered back with 11-straight runs over the next two innings.
  • Wheeling was able to chip away at the deficit with five runs in the fifth, including a two-out bases-clearing three-RBI double by Cameron, to make the score 11-7.
  • The Cardinals rally ended in the fifth, as the Lakers retired the next six batters in order to end the game.
GAME NOTES
  • Cameron went 3-for-5 with a double and three RBIs to lead Wheeling at the plate.
  • Junior pitcher Cameron Madden (Cincinnati, Ohio/Badin) was tagged with the loss. He went 2.2 innings and allowed eight runs (two earned) with six strikeouts.
UP NEXT
  • The Cardinals have some time off before they return to Frank Loria Field on Wednesday, March 17 for a non-conference game against Salem at 6 p.m.
