Wheeling sweeps Wesleyan with two 6-3 wins

WHEELING, W.Va. (March 27) – The Wheeling University baseball team earned a pair of 6-3 wins over West Virginia Wesleyan Saturday afternoon in Mountain East Conference (MEC) play.

HOW IT HAPPENED in Game 1
  • The Cardinals raced out to a 5-0 lead through three innings.
  • The Bobcats answered back with a run in the fourth, but Wheeling got the run right back in the fifth inning to take a 6-1 lead.
  • West Virginia Wesleyan scored twice in the sixth, but junior pitcher Albert Baez (Fort Worth, Texas/Timber Creek) came on in the seventh to shut to door.
GAME NOTES
  • Junior pitcher Logan Pillars (Rock Falls, Ill./Rock Falls) picked up the win on the bump.
  • Pillars (2-1) went 6.0 innings and limited the Bobcats to three runs on six hits with five strikeouts.
  • Junior second baseman Anthony May (Baldwinsville, N.Y./Charles W. Baker) smacked a solo home run and drew a walk in the win.
  • Junior outfielders Blake Vandiver (Alton, Ill./Roxana) and Jack Skantze (Clearwater, Fla./Countryside) each had two hits apiece. Vandiver had a double.
  • The contest was the first home game for the Cardinals at the JB Chambers Complex since May 4, 2019.
HOW IT HAPPENED in Game 2
  • Wheeling was limited to three hits in game two, but capitalized on six West Virginia Wesleyan errors to complete the sweep.
  • The Cardinals opened up a 6-0 lead through four innings.
  • West Virginia Wesleyan began to chip away with runs in the fifth and sixth innings, before loading the bases up in the seventh.
  • The Bobcats got one run to make the score 6-3, but Baez came on for the second time and got the final two outs to close out the game.
GAME NOTES
  • Junior pitcher Cameron Madden (Cincinnati, Ohio/Badin) earned the win on the hill.
  • Madden (1-3) allowed three runs (zero earned) and struck out 10 over 4.0 innings on the mound.
  • Baez earned his second save of the day and now has four on the season.
  • His four saves matches the Wheeling single-season record held by teammate Nick Luciano (Apollo, Pa./Kiski Area) from the 2019 season.
  • Senior third baseman Luis Dominguez (Bronx, N.Y./Cardinal Spellman) collected both RBIs for the Cardinals.
  • Wheeling stole eight bases in the game.
  • The Cardinals 2020 season concluded early with an identical 9-4 record last season.
