Afolayanka scores twice to give Cards win at Alderson Broaddus, 3-2

PHILIPPI, W.Va. (March 26) - The Wheeling University men's soccer team emerged victorious with a 2-1 win at Alderson Broaddus to earn its first win of the 2021 spring campaign.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Cardinals stormed out to an early lead when freshman forward Richard Afolayanka (Uniondale, N.Y. / Uniondale) found the back of the net off of a break away to give Wheeling the 1-0 lead.
  • The Battlers battled their way back as in the 10th-minute with a goal that knotted the score at 1-1.
  • Halfway through the first half, Alderson Broaddus took the lead with another goal.
  • The Battlers held the lead until the 73rd-minute when freshman forward Santiago Calle (Bogotá, Colombia / San Mateo Apostol) found the back of the net when he put back a rebound off of a shot from junior Miguel Martin (El TIgre, Venezuela/Marcet Football Academy) to tie the score at 2-2.
  • The score reminded tied until Afolayanka's game winning header in the 85' minute gave the Cardinals a 3-2 advantage.
MATCH NOTES
  • Afolayanka's goals were the first two of his college career.
  • Wheeling out-shot the Battlers 18-to-16 for the match.
  • Martin led the Cardinals in shots on goal, tallying three.

  • Wheeling will head back home on Friday, April 9 to take on Notre Dame College (Ohio) at Bishop Schmitt Field at 7 p.m.
