Wheeling takes one of two at Glenville State

GLENVILLE, W.Va. (March 22) – The Wheeling University baseball team split a pair of blowout games at Glenville State Sunday in Mountain East Conference (MEC) play. The Pioneers took game one 12-2, before the Cardinals answered back with a 16-2 win.

HOW IT HAPPENED in Game 1
  • Wheeling fell behind early when Glenville State scored five in the first and four in the second inning.
  • The Cardinals scored runs in the third and fourth innings, but the early deficit was too much to overcome.
GAME NOTES
  • Glenville State only had eight hits, but drew nine walks.
  • Junior Connor Watt (Roanoke, Va./Glenvar) and Francisco Morales (Dorado, Puerto Rico/Colegio Laico de Levittown) drove in the Wheeling runs.
HOW IT HAPPENED in Game 2
  • The Cardinals rebounded with a 16-2 win in game two.
  • Wheeling took a 3-0 lead in the third inning after sophomore Riley Cameron (Vass, N.C./Union Pines) cracked his second home run of the season.
  • The Pioneers made the score 4-2 through five innings.
  • The Cardinals plated five in the sixth and seven in the seventh to break the game open.
  • Wheeling loaded the bases with one out in the fifth, when Cameron delivered a bases-clearing single to make the score 8-2.
  • Junior Blake Vandiver (Alton, Ill./Roxana) delivered the big blow in the seventh when he connected on a three-run home run that made the score 13-2.
GAME NOTES
  • Junior pitcher Logan Pillars (Rock Falls, Ill./Rock Falls) earned the win on the mound. Pillars (1-1) went 5.0 innings and struck out seven, while allowing two runs on five hits.
  • Cameron led the way with a home run, five RBIs, and four runs scored. He also drew a pair of walks.
  • Vandiver ended the game with a pair of hits, including the home run, three RBIs and three runs scored.
  • Watt, junior Chris Iazzetta (Clinton, N.J./IMG Academy), and junior Hayden Hizer (Paden City, W.Va./Paden City) each collected two RBIs in the win.
  • The 16 runs scored was the most in a single-game in Wheeling baseball history since the 2012. Wheeling defeated Pitt.-Johnstown 16-6 on April 15 that year.

  • The Cardinals will travel south down to Athens, West Virginia to take on Concord for a MEC-doubleheader tomorrow, Monday, March 22 around 1 p.m.
