  • Complete Release
BRIDGEPORT, W.Va. (Feb. 3) - The Wheeling University baseball team was picked to finish third in the Mountain East Conference (MEC) North Division Preseason Coaches Poll announced Wednesday by the league office.

The Cardinals totaled 39 points and earned a pair of first-place votes. Notre Dame (Ohio) was picked first with 58 points and five first-place votes, while Fairmont State placed second with 56 points and three first-place votes. Frostburg State, West Liberty and Alderson Broaddus rounded out the poll.

Charleston was picked to win the MEC South Division, while Concord and Glenville State were picked second and third. The Golden Eagles, winners of the 2018 and 2019 MEC Tournaments, are also ranked seventh in the first edition of the NCBWA Atlantic Region rankings.

Wheeling is receiving votes in both the Collegiate Baseball 2021 NCAA Division II Preseason Top-40 Poll and the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association (NCBWA) Atlantic Region Preseason Poll.

The 2020 Cardinals were well on their way to shattering numerous school records before the season came to a halt due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Wheeling held a 9-4 record when the season was called and were well on pace to break the school-record of 19 wins in a single-season. The 2020 season marked the first time the program had ever finished a season with a winning-record in school-history.

Wheeling is currently scheduled to open its season on Friday, February 26 with a three-game series against Cal U at Wild Things Park in Washington, Pennsylvania.
