Cardinals come up short at Molloy, 16-8

ROCKVILLE CENTRE, N.Y. (Feb. 28) - The Wheeling University men's lacrosse team dropped a non-conference matchup 16-8 at Molloy Sunday afternoon.

TEAM LEADERS
  • Freshman Jacob Knippel (Glendale, Ariz./Ironwood) led the Cardinal offense with three goals on four shots. 
  • Freshman Braiden Struss (Langley, British Columbia/Walnut Grove) scored two goals while freshman Brody Fawver (Louisville, Ky./DuPont Manual), Jake Wodarek (Pittsburgh, Pa./Bethel Park), and Nik Mips (Middleton, Idaho/Middleton) each chipped in a goal. 
  • Freshman Joey Bertrand picked up a team-high seven ground balls. 
  • Junior goalie Dallin Isaacson (Reno, Nev./Earl Wooster) saved 11 shots in the loss.
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Wheeling fell behind 2-0 five minutes into the first quarter, but two quick goals from Fawver and Struss tied the game up. 
  • Molloy scored three unanswered goals within five minutes to close the first quarter with a 5-2 lead.
  • Knippel stopped the Molloy run and started the scoring in the second quarter with a goal at the 13:29 mark to cut the Lion lead to 5-3. 
  • Molloy tacked on another run of three-streight tallies and extended its lead to 8-3 halfway through the second quarter. 
  • Knippel added his second goal of the second quarter with 7:42 left, but the Lions posted one more marker five minutes later to lead 9-4 at the half. 
  • Molloy struck first in the third quarter, but Wheeling scored two goals courtesy of Struss and Mips to make the score 10-6 after three.
  • The Lion offense started the final quarter on a tear, scoring three goals within the first five minutes.
  • Scores from Knippel and Wodarek showed some life from the Cardinals, but three additional tallies from Molloy ended the matchup.

  • The Cardinals return home Saturday, March 6 to welcome Roberts Wesleyan College at Bishop Schmitt Field at 12 p.m.
