FROSTBURG, Md. (Feb. 25) – Four players scored in double-figures to help propel the Cardinals to a 90-75 win at Frostburg State Thursday night inside Bobcat Arena.
The Wheeling University men's basketball team improves to 5-10 on the season, while Frostburg State drops to 4-11. By virtue of its two head-to-head wins over the Bobcats, the Cardinals have clinched the fifth and final spot in the North Division for the upcoming Mountain East Conference (MEC) Tournament.
Senior guard
Jordan Reid (Silver Spring, Md./Albert Einstein),
fresh off a career-night at Alderson Broaddus, dropped 27 points and collected a new career-best 13 rebounds. Senior guard
Jarett Haines (Bronx, N.Y./New Rochelle) filled the stat sheet with 22 points, five rebounds, five assists and a career-high six steals.
Sophomore forward
John Korte (Watertown, Mass./Watertown) registered a double-double with 14 points and a career-high 12 rebounds, while junior guard
Jay Gentry (Milwaukee, Wisc./Brown Deer) chipped in 10 points and five boards.
Wheeling led for the majority of the first 15 minutes of the first half, including a 30-22 edge following a Korte layup with 7:15 until halftime. Frostburg State responded with an 11-2 spurt over the next three minutes to take the lead, but the Cardinals closed out the half with a 12-2 run of their own to take a 44-35 advantage into halftime.
Wheeling built its lead to 51-37 three minutes into the second half on a Korte trey. Frostburg State battled all the way back to a 71-70 score with five minutes to play in the game, but a Haines three pointer on the next possession turned the tide. The Cardinals re-built the lead to 84-70 at the 1:30-mark of the second half and cruised to the double-digit victory.
Defensively, the Cardinals forced 16 Bobcat turnovers and matched a season-best with 13 steals. Wheeling also held a 49 to 37 edge on the glass.
Both Canaan Bartley and Jihir Williams finished with 20 points to lead Frostburg State. Guard Agyei Edwards, who dropped 33 points in the first meeting, was limited to seven points on 2-of-11 shooting from the field.
Wheeling will put its two-game winning streak on the line this Saturday, February 27 when it welcomes rival and No. 20 West Liberty to the McDonough Center.
