INSTITUTE, W.Va. (Feb. 22) – Despite a career-high 28 points from senior guard
Jordan Reid (Silver Spring, Md./Albert Einstein), the Cardinals were handed an 86-68 loss at West Virginia State Monday evening.
The Wheeling University men's basketball team drops to 3-10 overall, while the Yellow Jackets improve to 8-5 this season.
Reid registered a double-double with 28 points on 12 of 22 shooting to go with 11 rebounds. Junior
Jay Gentry (Milwaukee, Wisc./Brown Deer) chipped in 10 points.
The Cardinals got off to a solid start and established a 28-19 lead on a steal-and-score by junior
Brent Price (Wheeling, W.Va./Central Catholic) with 8:19 to play in the first half.
West Virginia State rallied and tied the game at 29-29 on a basket-and-one near the five-minute mark. The Yellow Jackets then closed the half by out-scoring the Cardinals 15-8 to take a 44-37 lead into the locker rooms.
Price knocked down a three on the first possession of the second half, but the Yellow Jackets led throughout the second half and spent the final 15 minutes with a double-digit advantage.
West Virginia State controlled the glass with a 52-to-34 advantage in the category. The Yellow Jackets had 18 offensive rebounds and converted for 19 second-chance points.
Five Yellow Jackets scored in double figures, led by a 23-point performance by Glen Abram.
The Cardinals will play the second of its four games this week on Wednesday, February 24 when it travels to Phillipi, West Virginia to take on Alderson Broaddus around 7:30 p.m.
