Wheeling, W. Va. - After an 0-2 start to Mountain East Conference (MEC) play, the Wheeling University Men's Basketball team has bounced back nicely, going 2-0 over the past week, and climbing into a tie for fifth place in the conference. The teams leading scorer in those two games, graduate student
Jordan Reid, has been recognized by the MEC as this week's Men's Basketball Player of the Week.
Reid totaled 39 points during the week, while picking up 17 rebounds, and one double-double during the week. Reid has been a top scorer for the Cardinals all season long, averaging 19.1 points per game this season. He is also nearing a milestone in his collegiate career, entering Wednesday's game needing just 27 points to reach the 1,000 point mark in his career. If he reaches the feat, he will become the 47th player in Cardinals' history to reach the milestone.
Reid's strongest game of the past week came in the opener against Davis & Elkins, where his team came out with an 83-80 victory. Reid led the scoring in the game, putting up 21 points, and also led the team with seven rebounds in the game. For Reid, it was the third straight game that saw him score 20+ points, and was the fourth game this season where Reid eclipsed the 20-point mark. He did not make the shot at the end of the game to win the game, but he did his part in ensuring that three-pointer by teammate
John Korte could happen to lift them to victory.
In the second game of the week against West Virginia Wesleyan, Reid would come through with his first double-double of the season. Reid led the scoring effort with 18 points in the game, and followed that with 10 rebounds in the win. The effort brought his rebounding average to 6.0 per game, and established him as a force to be reckoned with on both sides of the ball. He shot 50% from the floor in that game, and came through from the free throw line, going a perfect 8-8 in the effort.
Reid is the first member of the Wheeling University Men's Basketball team to receive the weekly award this season, and is the first to take it home since he last won the award on March 1st, 2021. Reid is the 13th Wheeling University Cardinal to take home a weekly awrd from the MEC this season, and is the second this week after Lauren Calhoun was named MEC Women's Basketball Player of the Week for her efforts this week.
Reid and the rest of the Wheeling University Men's Basketball team will be back in action on Wednesday when they host West Virginia State at 7:30 pm inside the Alma Grace McDonough Center.
