Wheeling, W. Va. - On Wednesday night, the Wheeling University Wrestling team was set to host rival West Liberty University at 6 PM. However, that match has been postponed to February 15th, 2022, due to injuries suffered by both teams over the last week. Wheeling is coming off a successful season opener at the Pembroke Classic and will hit the mat on Sunday, November 14th, when they go to the Averett Open.
Wheeling was led by strong performances in their opening tournament from Julius Hobbs in the 133-pound weight class and Brennon Reid in the 157-pound weight class. Hobbs made it to the semifinal round of the 133-pound weight class and finished fourth overall at the event with a record of 3-2 in his five matches. Reid made it to the quarterfinal round of the 157-pound weight class, winning his first collegiate match in an 8-1 decision before dropping his second match.
After the postponement, Wheeling now has its sights set on the Averett Open this coming Sunday at Averett University. With one match already under these young wrestlers' belts, it is a chance for them to build off of those performances and continue to get better as the season moves on. With some injury issues to work through, Wheeling is taking things one day at a time as they build the foundation of a strong program moving forward.
The Wheeling University Wrestling team is back in action on Sunday when they travel to the Averett Open for an all-day tournament. The Wheeling wrestlers are looking to shine in their second match of the season.
