Wheeling, W. Va. - On Saturday, the Wheeling University Women's Soccer team (5-11-2, 4-10-2) honored their seniors during their final regular season game against West Liberty. It was one of those senior honorees that lifted her team to victory, as
Kenadee Burgoyne scored two goals with under five minutes to play as the Cardinals secured a 2-0 season-ending win.
Burgoyne entered the day tied for sixth in the Mountain East Conference with teammate
Braedynn Porter in goals scored, with each player sitting at eight goals apiece. However, after Porter's two goals, she finished her senior season with 10 goals, and was third in the conference in goals scored during the season. The mark set a new career-high for the senior, and gave her some confidence heading into the off-season, as she prepares to return for a fifth season next year.
With four minutes on the clock, the game was deadlocked at 0-0, and it was looking like another overtime game was on the horizon. However, Wheeling made a run towards their offensive end, Wheeling had made a couple of runs over the final 10 minutes of the game, but nothing came of it. However, Burgoyne got the ball on her own offensive side of the field after she took a pass from Mary Difonzo. Burgoyne had a clear shot in front of the net and scored her first goal of the night in the 85
th minute of the game. Two minutes later, Burgoyne added to her day when she found the net on the 88
th minute. Those two goals wound up being the difference maker as Wheeling went on to win 2-1.
Wheeling had the shot advantage throughout the night, but had to battle against a West Liberty defense that wasn't willing to budge. Wheeling outshot the Hilltoppers 15-7 in the first half, and followed it up with a 10-7 advantage in the second half. However, as a whole they were a lot more wild than past games, putting just nine of the 25 shots they took on net. While West Liberty took less total shots, in the end they were more efficient, putting seven of their 11 shots on net. However, when it came down to the final moments, Wheeling was able to hit their mark and a ore when it mattered.
To go along with the two goals, Burgoyne took a total of five shots, three on goal, finishing second on the team. Leading the shot department was fellow senior
Braedynn Porter, who finished the day with seven shots, four of those landing on goal.
Mary DiFonzo rounded out the offense with her most active game of the season, taking four shots and putting one on goal. Senior
Mikayla Yarwood finished her season out with seven saves and her third shutout of the year. She finished 17 saves shy of the single season record, but with one year remaining, she needs just 56 saves to become the all-time career saves leader at Wheeling University.
The Cardinals finished the 2021 regular season with a record of 5-11-2 overall and 4-10-2 in conference play. They end the season on a high-note, and have something to build off of heading into the off-season.
